I can't believe the terrible advice that is being spewed all over this forum. If your post is BS or adds no real value then you should not post it.
Plenty of "White Hat" companies rank and rank well. Saying things like I read in this thread makes me think this forum has gone nuts. Google has certainly played you guys.
I have around 300 sites I manage. I also have just over 20 sites that I own for testing purposes. What I would suggest is getting plenty of good unique content. Still plenty of good black hat methods out there. I also use (not too much as too much of anything is bad) repost.us for some content (it's free). You can add your own opinion to it to make it more unique. I also use Content Authority, they advertise here. We also use some spintax but we make sure it's 100% readable and it's good quality content before pushing it.
Garbage in garbage out. The same goes for links. One of the best things you can do for your client is to make sure they are properly registered (By hand) in every strong directory service out there. Google places (now plus), Foursquare, etc. There is a really good directory list on here somewhere.
Social signals are huge. (really huge) You can almost rank them on this alone. I would caution you though, use absolute caution and do not just ramrod this. From my own testing Google can see velocity here. Something I made note of was if my competitors had few Facebook likes and I suddenly had 200, they took note. This is where having a lot of throw away domains comes in.
Backlinks are still important. Quality backlinks is the key. But they need to be relevant back links. The anchor text needs to be natural too. I believe this was a big part of Panda. So if your anchor text was always "Blue Widget" and never "click here" or just your raw site, then they were easily onto you. We use about <20% of keywords in our anchors and sometimes just post the straight up link. This is part of NOT LEAVING A FOOTPRINT.
With that said, make sure your on page SEO is top notch. You can use a number of services to help you with this. We use IBP, and Website Auditor. Although this morning, I bought a WSO and it would work good for you.

I'm not affiated with him in anyway and almost never buy WSO's. I read about it this morning here somewhere and ended up buying it. But there are a number of other places you could do this as well. I think a site you can run a free one a week is
I could go on but you get the idea. SEO is not a push button service. Yes you can automate it. We do automate a lot of things. But you need to spend some time setting it up and making it 100% natural.
Hope that helps.
