When I started building my PBN I used a broker + a VA. The broker found and registered the domains. I'd pay a VA to transfer and install wordpress.

Then I eliminated the broker when I learned to find better domains on my own. Except I still paid my VA to transfer the domains and install wordpress.

Now I wanna eliminate my VA. But I am a retard in the respect that I can't transfer a simple fucking domain.

The reason I can't do it is because I've TRIED multiple times and always get a similar problem. Like before my VA with hostgator they gave me this same transfer fee notice.

    What I've done...

    Found another good domain.
Registered the domain at namecheap with fake details, new email as usual.
Now I want hosting. With eleven2's $2.98 / month shared hosting plan.

    Here's a screenshot of what I don't get:

Same thing that happened with hostgator. Back then I watched like 10 YT tuts about transfering domains. Hostgator kept asking for the fee. Went to another host, same story. Got a VA, within a few hours he had them all transferred to different hosts with no transfer fees.

I have 8 additional domains just sitting that I registered over the last month. Figured this would be a great week to buy hosting, learn this transfer bs and get rid of my VA.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

AFAIK to transfer a domain you register, get hosting, then change the DNS records. It pisses me off that I can design great sites, understand code well enough to customize everything I need.... but for 3 1/2 years I've never transferred a domain in my life. This has got to end right now.

You already have the domain right? So why don't you use the "use existing domain" tab in the screenshot above?

As to transfers, i keep all mine with namecheap/ namesilo, point the name servers to the hosting company and the domain will be in the "add-on
" domains in cpanel in about a day . The domain stays with the cheap register, there's no transfer this way and no fee

Find a decent registrar would intend to use as your "go to" domain registrar. I prefer enom and anything else with 2 factor authentication.

Once you have this setup, simply initiate the transfer from your new registrar.
You will need the EPP code from your current registrar.

Submit the transfer through the new registrar and then accept the email that your current registrar (holding the domains currently) send to you for verification.

Once transferred, if they didn't bring the host records with them, just point the nameservers at your webhost and wait for DNS propagation (not too long these days locally anyway)

Bear in mind the 60 lockdown period for transfers on new domains etc.

I hoard like 5k+ domains, so hit me up if you have any questions etc :)

There is no transfer without fee. You point the dns from the register or pay to transfer that domain to other register.

Thank you very much. You just got my VA fired. When I was new to PBNs I specifically asked about that option (after I saw the fee and ASSUMED there was no way around it). He said existing domain was a domain I already launched on another host. And that there was a "smarter" way to get around the fee.

Now it's clear he was making shit up to confuse and overcharge me. I went to like 5 hosts with my credit card wondering what ninja skills it took to get past that stupid transfer fee.

What is that transfer fee even for (if someone uses that option)? Does the host contact your registrar and have them change the DNS for you?

Or is that for transferring a domain from a different host? Servers confuse the shit out of me.

"Transferring" a domain actually has nothing to do with the hosting, it actually means "to change from one registrar to another". For example, if you wish to move from Namecheap to Godaddy, you'll do a domain transfer.

Thankfully, as mentioned before, none of this is necessary if you just wish to change hosts. Just get the nameservers from the new hosting, and add them to your domain, replacing the existing records.

Think of it as separate things:

    Domain - Your Domain
Registrar - Where you purchase, transfer or hold a Domain

    Site - Your Site.
Host - Where you Host your Site

I tend to use the same Registrar for most of my Domains (Non PBN's) and Separate Hosting for each of the sites.
You do not need to transfer Domains if you don't want to but most Hosts will try to encourage you to just because it means more cash for them.
If you want to use separate Registrars and Hosts just check with your Registrar and Host, ask how to set your Domain Name Server to point to your Host.

    Awesome, thank you both.

Anytime I see a noob ask about hosting I'm going out of my way to explain these key details. How encouragement to transfer domains may lead you to hire a VA who gleefully misinforms and overcharges you over and over for task a monkey could do.

Now I can buy hosts when I want how I want..... JR EXECs watch out. :p
