Hey all.

So I've just started a part time job while online business is a bit slow. Anyway I've just been asked worked 20 minutes over the time that I was meant to finish my shift, and I agreed. Then when I was signing out I got told that the company wouldn't consider paying me for the extra time until I had worked 30 minutes over. What the fff.....?

The other day I worked 15 minutes over, and I have a feeling it's going to stay like that.

Quitting time or what? What a joke!

What would you guys do in this situation? I'd love to hear what you all think.

P.S. Just say the word and I will name and shame the UK based company.

Time is money! If you just started working for them and they are ripping you off like this, they probably have bigger things waiting that will piss you off further along the road. Talk to the boss and try to sort the situation out, or act accordingly.

If you are an employee then you will take some shit.......Particularly in the UK where you work till 5am but they expect you to contribute till 7am.

This is what will make you work harder at being self employed.
 
Feel for you buddy... Unfortunately lots of companies work this way, make up an excuse why you need to leave on time everyday or do 30 mins so you at least get paid for your time.
 
I liek my job, I come in 5 mins before everyone else, and cllaim I been there an hour, and vice versa in the evenings :)

That's whats great about working in the web department of my uni :)

but anyways regarding your question,
first off dont name and shame (just in case of repurcussions)...

as a member of staff though, you are entitled to breaks etc...
and I could advise you on your rights if I knew more about the type of contract etc..
if it was a regular occurence, then you could legitimatley claim for more time in lieu etc...
if a one off (AND it was part of the understanding of the terms of contract) then it is expected of you,
and nothing you could do.

I had a job a couple years back where they expected me to come in an hour before everyone every day, and then work overtime, often into the night. I didn't even get paid for all this extra time I put it. So I packed up my stuff and quit. If you don't like your job, get a new one. Employers like that can shove it :P
 
Not from North Korea, but from a similar pay scaled (edit, or worse may be) country ;)
This is above normal really. In my country, if you are average, you only make a living. Only the most intelligent people survive lol.

Very normal for businesses to operate like this in the UK.. i work a part time job, don't get paid into the hour until 15 mins..

So if i work until 5:14.. i only get paid till 5.. work til 5:15, get paid for the 15 :)

However, i give a strict NO to overtime at my work.. they try to claim they can keep me & others behind a reasonable amount of time, as stated in our contracts..it is not actually stated in the contract what 'a reasonable amount of time' actually is.. could be 1 minute, or 30.. will vary per person really what 'reasonable' is.

They bully the youngsters using this 'reasonable time' shit, although the majority just walk out the minute their shift ends, nothing they can really do about it, disciplining someone for leaving when their contracted shift ends would not go very far, they know it would be a waste of everyone's time.. & Company money.

Especially if someone screamed 'child care' ..even if they have a child or not.

I say, tell your work to politely 'fuck off' when asked for overtime.. unless you are doing the full half hour & know you will be paid for it :)

Quit at quitting time, or milk it for the required time, and tell them that until you get paid for the time you work, you will work for the time you get paid.
 
Isn't this illegal in the United States? That or I've never heard/seen it happen. Every job I've ever had actually had to pay me 1.5x pay for overtime, 2x pay if I've been working for 12+ hours that day and I got paid for every minute.

See, there are a lot of youngsters working at the business. Unfortunately (for me I guess) I've been around the block a lot of times and worked for many amazing companies. So without tooting my own trumpet, I'm considered quite valuable there now.

Yeah man. I told my Fiancee about this (she is a US Citizen) and she said if it was in America that I could have a law suit on my hands. It just makes me look forward to moving there with her in November.

Oh I guess I should have mentioned before, but for those who are interested...

We officially set a date! I'm getting married on November 9th!!! :D
 
If you work hard and stay out of trouble, you can make a lot of money in the United States :) Good luck

Just wanted to leave my 2 cents here to say that i totally get you're pissed about it, but working for someone else is really like that.

I've worked for a big investment bank in my country and they didn't paid ANY overtime, even if you were there hours before you've finished the day PLUS on top of that they would cut of your pay check SECONDS if you were late.

They paid an above average salary but like uncutu said, time is money, and it matters to everyone.

As for the advise saying you should milk them out i wouldn't advise you to do that by 2 simple reasons:

1. If you think about it the whole World is a small village, you might not need a job in the future with them, but they may know someone that will hire you or even if you go on your own and open up your own they can hurt your business by talking with your potential clients saying you were a bad employee and they have the proof to back that up.

2. This is just a moral based opinion, that is by thinking that if i had my own business i wouldn't want someone to work for me and trying to milk me (and i'm not saying it's right what they are doing, it's not), but if you don't want to deal with it just leave.

If you've got a job on this financial crisis we are going trough I'm sure you can get another one, maybe even better than this one.

My advise, as long as you don't HAVE to have the job (aka, getting fired is a possibility), I would say to them, "If you want me to work past my shift and you won't pay me the extra time until the 30 minute mark, then I will work 30 minutes past... no more, no less."

You should work for the time you're paid and get paid for the time you work.
