I think this menu that floats on the left is really well done http://www.nuwomb.com

would this be part of the theme or a widget?

I don't see it- only the one that shows when clicking "navigation", yes it has "home", "about" etc but it doesn't have anything interesting.

I just liked the way it stays in position when you scroll down the web page. thats what i mean when i ask how its done

It grabbed my attention, i thought it would work well in a project i am working on

also it is outside of the margins where the content is, i dont know how to do that either

Umm you really don't need to weigh your page down with javascript to do this.

The all-css solution is just adding style="position:fixed;position:absolute;" to your menu div. It stays wherever you put it. I would nest it instead a center positioned container div (style="margin:0 auto;width:980px;height:100%") and then position the menu div wherever you like in relation to that. If you want it similar to the one in your example, use style="left:0px;top:0px;"

    Done.

EDIT: To get it alongside your content, just give your content div the rest of the width of your container and float to the right. (style="float:right;width:700px;")

That's very helpful, I am going to read up on the div tag.
So I think I have to put a menu inside a div tag and give it a name, then in CSS make this div go into position. Am I right about that, and can this be done with a wordpress theme?

Yep you can add custom code into Wordpress easily enough. The position:fixed CSS style is what you'll need to stick the div to the side of the page when scrolling.

So I take it position:fixed is how you anchor a background as well? I've seen sites who's background doesn't scroll when you do, is that just done with position:fixed ?
