I keep getting spam comments on my blog. What does that mean?

Recently I've been getting non stop comments with backlinks on my blog. Is that a good thing? Should I approve the comments? I heard outgoing back links can hurt my site, is that true?

no don't approve those comments..
and go to Wp settings and uncheck option "post comments on new posts"

Don't approve those comments.

Btw, it means that someone's ScrapeBox is on, lol.

Oh ok, but getting spam only means your blog actually rising in ranks, right?

Well in that you have a blog that shows up in the first 1000 results or so for some terms.

Yes someone is trying to find auto approve blogs. I get about 10 a day. I usually approve the 1st one so my /feed/comment/ url in WP doesnt 404

means welcome to the jungle :p

I installed WP Hashcash to handle this kind of comment, just make sure to empty spam once a week or a month.

Actually Yes Outgoing links are not healthy for a website ..
So don't approve them .. :)

Even if the comments are pointing to authority sites written by experts in their respective niches?

You should recognize a spam comment form one related to your content. Usually the second ones do not have a back link pointing another website. Akismet is doing a great job for me of filtering the comments .

They are all spam, so don't approve them. Activate the aksimet plugin and get rid of these comments from the bots.

you can remove comments fields from theme, if you don't want comments. that spam will stop

The spam addons are usually pretty good about grabbing most (if not all) of the spam comments. That's what I use and have been safely deleting all spam but lets real comments thru.

I wonder how many of the comments are from BHW members?

Make them register to post comment, the one who want to post will be the real one and not bots.

Just delete their URLs and approve SOME of the comments so it looks like your site is busy/popular from their comments but don't get any additional outbound links as you've deleted their spammy URLs. Of course, make sure the comment is somewhat readable (like "Great blog!" or "I enjoyed reading this!").
