someone i know has been looking for a job for the past 6 months. He posted on CL that he is looking for students to tutor.
Someone called him and said he is sending his daughter over for tutoring and he will send $6300, take $300 for your services and send the rest back. he was going to do it.
didnt know Nigerians have started to call now. thought its email only.

There are scammers all over the world, not just Nigeria. If your friend was dumb enough to fall for that and send $6,000 back to the guy, then he deserves to lose the money.

These scams are all over Craigslist! I can't believe it, they horde the job sections with these ads. It's pretty terrible, because the people they convince are young people who don't have money to be blowing on stuff. The check will bounce after you've already sent real money to them.

Why are you acting like an idiot ?

Nobody deserves such a thing. Do you know how it feels to be jobless and desperately search for a job for 6 months ?
Do you know all the things desperate people are ready to do to earn some money ? Some people kill people for 1000$ in the US.

His friend clearly had no idea what is going on with internet scams. And yet your first response to that is "if your friend was dumb enough".
Yes, you are the smartest person in the world... good for you

Scammers need to be imprisoned for several years. Bastards.

If only we could get the Somalia pirates to attack the Nigerian scammers...

That would cure two ills with one stone. :)

    @bartman

If your serious it is ALWAYS a good and noble thing when you prevent someone else from getting taken for a ride. Many people are naive to the scams out there. They think of the world as being what your taught in school. Not realizing that people will do what ever to get over on you.

This scam relies on the fact that the US requires money orders to have the money available within a certain number of days. In other words you can actually cash the money order, even though it is bogus. You learn this when the financial institution charges you for the money they paid out, that you were supposed to send to the originator of the scam. If you actually cashed the check, put the money in a high interest account and make a few cents off it before you give it back.

    I do this:

I agree to their deal, take the money order and send it to the FBI office in Houston. Then I mail the scammer a cow turd (plenty of them in the pasture next door) I wrap it in bubble wrap, and add a note that says "Bullshit".

Usually they will even let you use their fed ex account to send the turd.

The funny thing is that they ALWAYS contact me and tell me I scammed them. I tell them, "Yeah, and I enjoyed it immensely - how do you like THEM apples?" Done it about ten times now.

BTY you will get the same scam if you try to sell a laptop on Craigslist. Usually, they are travailing overseas, and want to send you money (a lot more than you asked for), and they want you to send the laptop to their daughter or whoever it was. Sometimes they also add money to the total for you to send to the relative along with the laptop. When I respond to the laptop ones, I send them a concrete block in a big box (hey, they EXPECT it to be heavy!). I often wonder how much fed ex charges to ship a concrete block to Nigeria first class ..
