From my experience buddy, I can tell you that even shitty sites rank. Period.
Want some proof? I got a 2009 webs.com blog ranking in #1 for a long tail KW. The site is shit, really there are no other words. Haha I really wonder how that site ranked in the first place

The site itself doesn't have to look amazing, just make sure you write out some unique content and do plenty of on-page SEO. If the competition is easy, you won't even need to do that much link-building...not sure what your issue is here, just execute.
