I have an Idea. Whats the infrastructure needed ?

My latest project is to create a site a website with lots of videos. This is not something new but the regular Funny Videos/Pics/ etc. Please help me to start with the right infrastructure.

Here is the url and a list of sites that will fall into the similar category.

I tried to look at the source ( right click -> view source) of these sites but could not find anything conclusive. Are these sites made from custom programs ?

Though my site is primarily on videos/photos etc. but the content is going to come from end users. I am planning to setup weekly/monthly "contests" where users can upload their content. So, it very important that the interface that i am going to provide for uploading such user generated content is very simple in design. Otherwise the users will not be able to upload. Also, the upload interface is going to be integrated into android/iphone later.

You might say, whatz new with the idea. As a matter of fact , there is nothing. All that i am trying to do is to generate the content in local languages. Thats it. I think there is great potential for such a site and content.

Initially i am planning to go for wordpress or some other solution (i am willing to pay if such thing exists) that has lot of flexibility in terms of plugins . Later once the sites picks up volume i can change to some thing else. Also, the site requires a solution that optimizes the loading of videos. Considering the bandwidth limitations on smartphone the loading of the videos's has to be quick. ( how to do that)

Please share your thoughts on this .

So, what you are basically trying to do is to make a "Funny Youtube" site. lol Does that sum it up pretty good? If so, at least you have a niche in mind to narrow down the potential visitor-type to your site, but it's EXTREMELY competitive, so, you better dig your heels deeply into the dirt to fight the competition.

Thats very true. I am not expecting the traffic to come to my site because the content is very good but because they will have something to gain - interms of gifts,coupons etc. Traffic will be driven not solely based on the organic methods, but a combination of organic and paid routes.

Thats been narrowed down too. The site is going to target a specific local language therefore a small set of visitors initially. Once the sites sees niche visitors from a specific language/community it will be easy to monetize.

The best infrastructure is the one that is the simplest, just make your site easy to watch video and you're in the right path.

After looking around various sites, wordpress seems to be the best solution, because of the flexibility it provides. Currently favorite theme is wpzoom's manifest

There is too much competition, I suggest not.

Are you looking for a solution similar to youtube where users can also send their videos directly and it will convert then or are you mainly going to be a listing site that wont be hosting any of the videos but will rather be channeling them from the owners ?

There are several ways to approach your idea, need to know what you are expecting from it, in terms of functionality

you can run this with simple wordpress ... if you want to automate it ..

just use some autoposting plugins like wprobot .. and it would do the job for you
