Because no object with mass can reach the speed of light. As you accelerate an object it's mass increases, reaching precisely infinite mass at c (the speed of light), so to reach that speed you would need to use infinite energy (obviously impossible). Fully explaining why that happens needs a fairly strong grasp of general relativity. Funny things happen if you theoretically assume an object would move at or faster than the speed of light. It would go backwards through time!

Although I believe we will probably never be able to propel anything with mass AT the exact speed of light due to the increase in mass, that doesn't mean we will never be able to EXCEED it. Interestingly enough, when you view the science, the mass drops off once past the speed of light in the same fashion as increases as it approaches the speed.

As you stated in your reply, time starts doing interesting stuff on both sides as welll. According to studies that I had read some time ago (and it's all pretty theoretical), approaching the speed would slow time down in the vehicle (therefore you would travel to the future - how much so depends on how long you sustain that speed). On the other side (speed of light+), it would actually reverse time so you could theoretically travel to the past.

I only hope that after this OldSalt passes on that we get to watch what goes on 'down here'. There is so much fascinating science that will mature in the future!

This man knows his stuff. That's the nice thing about physics, if you want to know what some weird thing will do, you just put in the numbers into the equation and see what wacky result happens. I still think it's not reasonable to believe that we will ever exceed the speed of light, since we can't really reach that speed without being at the speed of light during acceleration. But who knows, maybe Quantum Entanglement will show us some things we don't know, but I doubt it (I think it's more likely that that works with some kind of space folding, kinda like how an Alcubierre Drive is supposed to work). It just seems unlikely, since things going backwards through time...man no idea how that'd even look/go. But who knows, the universe is a crazy place.

What you suggested was a bit more extreme than that, and it isn't IMPOSSIBLE, just not particularly economic. It is impossible to do without losses, is all my post was trying to show really.

When I read of the news back when it was released, they said they had considered all possible sources of error and had replaced all detectors that could have caused erroneous readings. They did the experiment numerous times with same outcome. Given the huge implications, I am pretty certain they would not release something of his importance if they had not thoroughly examined their work. Nevertheless, some months later, they come back and disprove the experiment as faulty.

As it always happens, people don't like taking the truth in their face. We have plenty of examples, Galileo, Einstein and many other scientists.
