I have a question---is article submission still effective for achieving quality backlinks?

There are some auto approved article directory sites like Goarticle ...what type of backlinks I can get from there? Good or poor?

Yes article submission still have importance.
Only quality backlinks matters.
I publish all my articles to http://largearticle.com
and ezinearticles and goarticles
I generally get 20-25 visitors daily from http://largearticle.com
i have published around 15-20 articles on http://largearticle.com

If you are posting unique quality articles contents, then no worry! Any SE's can't do harm your websites. Even if you can submit same IP address articles websites with unique contents.

I would say yes, Article directories does add value to link building as diversity is always good. Having your T1s spread across Web2.0s, PDF sites, Article directories, Press releases,etc over a well thought out schedule works pretty good.

However, do bare in mind if you would like to rank properly, QUALITY Content is really important.

I heard that auto approved article directory backlinks do not carry same value as directories like ezine do! ...is it true?

article submission is still a good way for traffic and back links. You should do it in right way , submitting the same article to 2k article directories wont give you results as compared to submitting unique or highly spinned articles on 40-50 article directories.

As part of an eclectic mix of back links, article submissions still have a big part to play, I don't think there is any doubt on that score. Opinions seem to be divided as to whether auto-approved submission sites are as valuable as the likes of Ezine, but good content is ALWAYS preferable, so it's a good idea to make sure that you have approval-worthy content to submit to the more reputable sites.
