I have a great idea for a game. I'm fairly good at programming, but my Achilles heel is marketing and other soft skills.

Are there any books, DVDs or MOOCs that you can recommend? My main worry is making something relevant to the market, something that teens and young adults will enjoy playing and sharing with their friends.

Thanks

Take a highly rated digital marketing course on Udemy. Sign up and wait for it to drop around $15 or below, and then purchase it.

Look for one that gives a good overview on digital marketing in general, and then go on YouTube / google and search for some of the terms in the course to get more in-depth on some of the ideas you saw, and then read some stuff on here to fill in gaps in your knowledge in the parts of marketing that interested you.

Try to find a course with good reviews and updated for at least 2019. If it hasn’t been updated, it should still be fine, as you want something that just gives a good overview of the subject, since the details and specific tactics can change. You want to know the fundamentals, and then let this forum and up to date articles bring you up to speed with what’s going on now.

There are many resources online where you can find everything you need about marketing. A list of books and courses are completely free, so you can get valuable knowledge at no price. These typically start at a basic level, so it does not matter if you are a total beginner in the field.

yes, youtube plenty of free stuff, look here as well, great idea @Donsha, connect with a twitch streamer and use social media, lots of tools for that. Marketing is my weak point, you can study tons online, if you decide to invest in a course, read the comments and ask ?'s, same if you decide to outsource your marketing ask ?s have a list of them, if they skip one, or give generic answers cross them off the list, if it takes 5 days to reply, without a decent excuse, cross them off the list. Except for the weekend, someone should get back to you in 2 business days at the most if they are reliable.
Good luck on your game!

Twitch streamers play a big role in popularizing the game. see: Among Us

If your game is good enough it will only take a couple of proper steps in marketing to get in twitch or youtube big channels and subsequently gain a lot of users.

Just focus in developing it then u can worry about marketing,

Make a 'viral' demo video and release it on Reddit to see if people are interested if the reaction is positive you can go and make an actually functional/playable version of the game

If you're making a game in Unreal Engine or something similar, or actually anywhere and it has good graphics, you can post it on TikTok, I see it pretty often & these videos are getting millions of likes just because someone created a cave out of few rocks and added a torch and night sky...
Boom, millions of likes and I believe 10.000+ sales for him.
Try posting videos of making the game on TikTok (if it's something interesting) and it might blow up one day.

LOL. Devious! What if someone/some team beats me to making the game?

If you are good on other things, like marketing, then don't spend time trying to do it but yourself, hire someone, a person or an agency, and then when it get's done, do you magic with marketing
