If you're just looking to host an ebook selling site almost any hosting service will be fine. I've personally had luck with low volume sites hosted at 1&1, Dreamhost, and Bluehost. If you're looking for high volume sites, you might as well spend good money and get co-location hosting at Rackspace or any number of other reputable businesses.

It all depends on what kind of traffic you expect and what software/applications you want to use. Linux servers are almost always more reliable than Windows servers and there is a large amount of free software and back-end applications that are Linux only.

Most hosting services offer ample enough bandwidth to handle low-medium volume sites. Last year, I had 300,000 visitors over the course of 2 days to a blog I had hosted with 1&1 and it only hiccuped once. That said, 1&1 is not the greatest host and their customer support is weak at times.

The choice is really yours, but know what you want before you spend the money.

Hope that helps.

I read this thread a couple of days ago, and I thought, nehh they are OK, I use them and so far so good..

BUT, today they disable my whole account!!!!!!!! WITH NO WARNING, LIKE 25 DOMAINS....

Just because I have a add on domain that associates with SEX? WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCK!

If I WANT TO LOOK AT PORN I FUCKING DO IT! It feels like some cop would arrest you on the street just because you had a porno mag in your pocket!

I called them and they told me that's it's ILLEGAL TO HAVE ANYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH SEX IN THE STATE OF UTAH! For me that lives in Europe this is just fucking unbelievable I feel like they violated my HUMAN RIGHTS!

I say FUCK Bluehost, and FUCK that law that forbids PORN!

This is what scares me, forbidding people to have/watch regular porn, man, some religious idiots making it hard for people to live their lives the way they want to. I don't writhe everything I want to say about this, cuz I don't want the friiicki'n nsa or some other organization come knocking on my door.. Just see what FUCKING yahoo did in China!

OK, I'm a bit angry... fuck it.

I will watch these to videos over and over again...

Wow that sucks..

Just to follow up on my awesome bluehost experience last week my shared server was DDOS'd by some british prick. I lost a good $800 in sales and ppc that day. Gotta roll with the punches, and then terminate your Bluehost account...

another reason to go dedicated with load-balancing between different datacenters, at a loss-rate of $800 a day, it is the only wise decision you can make - remember it is your business and securing the profits with stable servers is a must

i had about 10 domains hosted with bluehost (on one account), and each of them are running a CMS/WP/Joomla/eCommerce site.
I never had any problems with memory or cpu resources.

the only issue i had with them is the slow response time. they are definitely oversold.
pages with like 8 db queries take about 1 sec to process the queries, and another 1-2 secs to generate the output.

i switched to hostgator, and its about 4 times faster. the same scenario, the same 10 domains transfered over thru cpanel backups.

haven't had any issues yet with hostgator.

Hostgator is still a lot wosre then bluehost

True that - Hostgator is terrible.

I actually have a Bluehost account, and fortunately, haven't had much problems yet. I have around 45 add-on domains and they are all running fine. Not too bad for just $7 bucks a month so I'm not complaining.

Sorry to hear that some of you other guys got screwed though.

I'm from the startup world and to be perfectly honest we laugh at hosts like Bluehost and HostGator.

For VPS / Dedicated boxes we recommend MediaTemple, Rackspace, or Slicehost, but I guess the price plus the sysadmin stuff is a pain for the non-techy types. You'll have to know how to administer a Linux server to get the most out of them.

I personally use WebFaction for shared hosting and find them excellent. I run about 20 sites from my account, although my traffic is only at 500 uniques/day. I can also recommend ASmallOrange for sites with minimal traffic.

Just my two cents.
