you should keep the PC u have and take the 7.5k and invest it in something, make money then buy yourself a new Mac,

Rule #1 to getting a little money, don't invest it in something that won't have a ROI

You know what, this is my fault i should have never responded to this thread...I'm sorry. People confuse good advice with hatting. Tell you what I think you should buy your wife a Mac, and yourself a Mac Pro

I agree with you. Some people don't deserve to be helped because they always have a pessimistic attitude towards their life.

    Cheers :)

I would get a windows 7 or windows xp laptop.. a lot more software for IM works on windows.

leave your wife with the mac.. and you can play around on it when you're bored.

I don't have any laptops to suggest at the moment.. it also depends on what you plan on doing. do you do graphics? or do you just run a lot of software. will you be playing video games on it? or is it solely for your online ventures? I normally downgrade my video card which saves some money because I don't do much graphic work, and I don't play PC games.

if you tell us what you'll actually be using the laptop for we could give better suggestions.

I just recently got a new desktop because my old one fried... got it for under 300$.. it's not top of the line.. but it works for what I need it for.

Get the one that suits your needs. You know your actual needs, you also know your budget, and you'd be having a top of the line Mac at home too. Get a decent laptop which you can take everywhere with you. If laptop isn't your cup of fun, then get a desktop PC... whatever that suits you! :) Get on eBay and look at what's available. You will get plenty of combos, configurations, brands to choose from. Then see some reviews on good sites. Then decide...

You may even get a top quality for a discount... Christmas time, you see!

Of course, gift your wife a Mac Book Pro. It's Christmas time for her too, and her eventual happiness is worth lot more than the price you pay for the apple. :D

    P.S.:

I re-read your OP and found that you'd like a lappy! Go for it then!
