Hi there, that all depends on the back link. Is it niche relevant? does the site get real traffic , is the sites DA /TF / CF all in order and is it spam free? If all of this is positive and you are not going after a super competitive KW then sure you will get a boost. I mainly use them for indexing.

You won't get ranking by building 1 link. If the site have good authority and you are kewyord is easy to rank then you can get a boost of course. But it all depends on many factors to get rank.

The only thing special about a google news approved site is that if you stuff keywords into the title, there's a chance your news listing will appear at the top of the SERPs for that keyword where it shows related news stories.

Other than that, there's no special ranking attributed to news sites. If the news story is popular and has other backlinks to it from the homepage of the news site or from other bloggers etc, then it adds to the SEO value or authority, but generally these Google news approved sites dont' get the same kind of traction or reach as a major news outlet like CNN, WSJ or Forbes.
