I'd never to Amazon's affiliate program. The payouts are too small. The least I'll consider is 20%. Anything less is not worth it. I've negotiated with affiliate programs in the past for higher payouts too.

What affiliate program you pick to promote is going to be crucial for your earning potential. One affiliate program has basically lost me because the payouts are too small, and even though the product is good for my audience, it isn't worth it for me to invest all of this time when I could be making $500/month with them but be making $1,000+/month with other programs.

Pick a profitable affiliate program/product and promote that.
