Does anyone else share the paranoia that if you store links in G Docs they [BIG G] can easily scan your docs and penalize you?? For what, IDK for anything. Its to the point that I just started using and paying for Microsoft Office 365.

I would not really worry about them spying on your docs. Yes, that information can be shared and read by feds, etc. (if the situation rises) but that is true with all information shared digitally. As for the BIG Gs prying eyes I don't think there is any issue with that as I have been using them for a long time with TONS of info pertaining to JVs, EMDs, Competition Analysis, and more with no negative performance impacts.

At some point, that info could help them take a final decision regarding you or your accounts ;)

You're just too paranoid. I store the links only on Google Drive and I don't see them fetching my files to find the links. That would be extremely unprofessional and waste of time. That means they're not capable of developing a good algorithm to combat spam. Also they prefer to do things in volume, not chase sites one by one, unless you submit the site for manual review. What their intents are with the disavow tool, one can never know, since it means volume for them.

I don't trust Google docs. It's not so much about privacy but about their accounts being easily hacked. I wouldn't want my content spreading like wildfire. So, no, it's not just you.

The acc can be hacked because the owner is too stupid. There is no easy way to hack an email acc. As for docs, idk i keep only some logins nothing more.

I don't consciously think that big G could scan your docs and penalize you for that, but I'm unconsciously sure that they could penalize you for almost anything.
And, yes, that's called paranoia.

They may not give a shit about one guy, but I totally think they could pick up on the same person making lots of google docs (ie: seo service providers) to use as an updated reporting feature for clients.

Maybe I'm being paranoid here but sometimes it pays to be paranoid, I use 0 google products. I never understood how public SEO services here on BHW could offer reporting through Google Docs or even use gmail, sure isn't that like opening the door and saying come on in and check out our links for EVERY single client we have!?

Google employee signs up for the providers package gets his Google Doc link from said provider - google employee now knows the providers Google doc details so can easily go back to big G HQ and find every single client that provider has ever worked with, not only that he has a nice full scale link report of every step carried out...

Meh who knows really, but the internet is a shady place and seo is a battlefield, google is the enemy... Never underestimate the enemy and the lengths he'll go to win :p

Of all the (many) things that are sketchy about not only G but pretty much any company that has got as big as them as quickly as they have, G Docs are not something that I would lose a moment's sleep over. Sure, if they wished to, they could go into your docs and find stuff that they could theoretically use to penalise you. But it just seems like a massive waste of time and resource to do that so that's not one of the things that makes my Spidey sense tingle.

Good idea. I don't even trust Google. I have even disabled tracking features of all end-user software from Google such as Chrome and Android.
Big corps including Microsoft do the same. They are cunning and they sell your personal information. That's how they make money.
THat's why i often use Duckduckgo instead.

They probably have billions if not trillions of google docs. The amount of resources required to scan and find links is near imporssible even though Google is so huge.
Again, It is illegal for google to snoop into your private files. I highly doubt google gives a shit about you using G docs.

They can but they wont do. There are so many better options to find shitty sites to penalize especially given the Hugh resources they have.

hm..good question.. I Know that gmail, slideshares and pdfs are really scaned by google..

As mentioned above, gut-feeling is that due to the vast quantity of docs they store, it just doesn't make an efficient use of time looking at & for individuals.

However, that said, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. As tommy stated, it doesn't make too much sense building and storing a part of your business with 'the enemy'. T's & C's can change in a flash, and you don't want the carpet being pulled out from under you one day.

I was fighting with exactly the same question just a few days ago, but I extended it yet about Dropbox, Drive and similar services.
From Google products, I use GMail (my main account), Analytics, Docs, Drive, Google Apps, Youtube, which can be scary, on the other hand, I don't store there any illegal kind of information or stuff that could be flagged/deleted.

I ended up with accepting that Google does scan everything what I do on the internet, but the same does for example Facebook (and Microsoft's Windows as well).

I don't really think that using Microsoft Office 365 changes something.
