I don't get what chatgpt is all about

I don't get the concept of chatgpt and ai content writing.
Like I know how google works. They look at backlinks, and they look at the value of those backlinks. if it's easy to get a backlink (every jackass has that backlink) then that backlink is worthless. they look at the relevance of a backlink. if a dentist has a backlink from a website about how to cut your own hair at home, it's weird. etc etc.

but then with chatgpt, I dont get how it works. I don't get what's going on behind the scenes. How does the ai know what to write? is it just taking content from other websites and rewriting it? but then that's a spinner. how is this different from a spinner? I have never played with ai, maybe if I play with it I get an idea. How can I start writing content using chatgpt?
