Are you looking for an actual course or just wanting to know some methods of building links that do not cost any money? My guess is methods.
If you are looking for a way to build some free links then look around the forum for some of the url list shares. There are quite a few of them.
You can build links manually using those urls for free. A very good way to get started if you are low on money.

If you are working manually I would say that blog comments are a good place to start. Profile links are a numbers game so doing them manually and getting much good from them will be hard.
