Hurricane Sandy- How to Monetize?

I live in Central NJ right now and it is hectic.
Our governor is issuing an executive order rationing gas due to LONG lines for gas.


How can we monetize this situation?
People need help and a few dollars for more comfort would help.

Any ideas welcome.
Even black hat. :)

EDIT: and No don't want to hear any moral jargon as I have been affected by this hurricane as well as my friends. Just got power back up for the... 5th time... yeah...

Before everyone gets on their moral high horse and starts bashing the Op - it's a valid question.
He didn't say how can he scam Hurricane survivors, he said how can he monetize the situation.

I think he's looking for valid ideas or products. For instance, an app that tells which one of your friends have power and which ones don't. Then when you charge your cell phone, you would know where you could go if you need power. Download for $.99.

There would be nothing immoral about that. I'm in CT and was hit pretty hard so I wouldn't support anything that would take advantage of those who are in dire straits.

I agree but your headline sounds like you are trying to monetize on the tragedy which is the same wording but different context. You could have said, " Stuck with no power because of Huricane Sandy. How to make the best of the situation". I know that's long but you get the point :)

No one mentioned tragedy, those are words that you are adding into his OP. There are plenty of ways one can monetize through this sadly enough situation that can result in some positive outcomes. For example if you check out Reuters(I cant post link) they have an article of how this hurricane brought many opportunities to make some good money for many businesses.

If i was you man, I would get Gas and Generators those are extremely in need.
I ve heard a few people say , "Damn, I should have bought gas 1 week before the hurricane " and they would have made some chunky change. So yea if you got gas you can make some money selling it, they are pretty valuable as of now.

Your an idiot "dawg". All I was saying is that someone may "Perceive" it in the way I mentioned above. Why? Because that is how I perceived it. Maybe the comprehension was a wee bit too much for you to comprehend but I guess you just don't "feelmedawg"
 
I would suggest the following:

Take this opportunity to create good relations.

Make a Facebook event inviting people to perform specific tasks such as Cleaning up the City etc. Then offer some freebies and distribute flyers with your Optin Page or Facebook Fanpage asking them to hit the page for some discounts to common household stuffs people might have lost during the tragedy (I sincerely hope people are able to get back to their normal life as soon as possible).

You have now got targeted leads that you can use to promote products further down the years to come.

Keep your intention to help pure and you will see the benefits.

BTW Hope you and your loved ones are fine and not affected by the Hurricane severely. Good luck. :)

You obviously missed the part of his post quoted above.

If someone wants to help out and make some money in times of disaster then that's good and helps the economy. I really don't think he's at all interested in providing any value. He's obviously struggling financially and because he was "in" the hurricane he thinks it's ok to go black hat it up and add to an already dire situation.

It's not a huge deal, but it's a bit sad and really danizdeman needs to re-assess his mentality if he wants real success in business.

I've been heavily researching solar power and off-grid systems with battery banks the last 2 days.

I think offering installation and consulting up here in the Northeast especially in this aftermath would be a REALLY good idea.

People are afraid of this happening again and now is the time to sell, to sell a emergency backup system that can help them.

Anything from solar panels, to solar thermal, to battery banks, wind power, water-powered sump pumps, etc.


This is something I will be heavily considering. Especially since ENERGY intrigues me highly.
Only thing is I don't have electrical experience or knowledge.

Exactly. Most states require you to be a certified electrician before doing work on such things. You can sell them but installing them and advising is an entirely different matter. Talk to a business lawyer and your state/city business departments on the required documents.
 
I researched quite a bit about home systems however now I came up with a genius idea.

I just ordered all of the parts off ebay and I will be making a home-made solar generator that can charge up with the car and has AC/usb inputs.
They will charge both from the car and the sun. 60W panels go with the system.

Plan on selling on Ebay but even extending to family and friends at a certain point.

I'm fairly certain I do not need a license for that.
 
If you had the money and time, you could research all the places who make things that require no batteries, gas, etc. Years ago I remember that there was a shakeable flashlight. There are wind-up radios, etc. That way, people could have things and not have to run out for batteries and matches. People in catastrophes need things with self-contained power. In a true disaster, batteries, candles, etc, are the first things that stores won't carry. Hell, there could even be a refrigerator powered by a huge crank. Crank for 5 minutes, fridge lasts for an hour, etc.
 
Every situation gets monetized whether you do it or like it isn't important. The fact is someone will go where others won't tread. I watched a documentary a little while ago about someone who made a living from stealing from the criminal underworld (yeah exactly!), they called him "The Devil", and his catch phrase was "it's me the devil".

I mean just look at all the companies who can't wait to get into Iraq. All the construction companies around the east coast are in for an early Christmas present.

It's all just capitalism, somebody wins somebody loses. Life is like a very deadly game of roulette and everyday the wheel spins again. It's like the old saying from the film Lord of War "on a long enough time line the survival rate for everybody drops to zero". Know your odds and go and play.
