So on average one of my clients gets around $5-10 a day but maybe once a month they get these huge $50-80 days. They ask me how they can get more of them.

The traffic count is the same and the amount of clicks is average, $1-$5

I told them its some ad that someone is paying a lot for.

My question is, is there a way we can get those high paying ads to show more?

I'd look at the google analytics - contents - adsense and try to nail down what page on what day is generating this kind of income, check to see if thet CTR is unusually higher, and of course look at the cpc in general for that day. This should give you a clue of what's happening and how to duplicate it. I normally look at the pages that are generating more income, then I tweak those pages. If the bulk of income comes from home page, then it could be a new post/promo...

Go into adsense and filter out the ads that do not pay much at all.

Sounds like a holiday, or big shopping day when people do a lot of shopping, google usually spreads the high PPC love because a lot of advertisers try to sell shit on those days and there is a lot of extra ad inventory to go around. Christmas, Valentines day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday. Sometimes even a week or two building up to those days you get crazy PPC.

You can try to place some filters on which ads appear I'm not sure how flexible this is since I've never bothered with this myself but by and large this is out of your control. Payout is determined by many things including search trends, basic supply and demand, the weather, whether or not the sky is blue.... There are just so many factors involved and publishers have very little control over practically all of them. One day there could be 20 advertisers for your keyword, the next day there could be 10 and all of a sudden there's less competition and your payout bottoms out. Then the next day Dr Oz could mention a product you are promoting on his TV show and the next thing you know you're making $4 a click instead of .50 cents.

The best things you can do are build your sites around keywords that have high adwords competition, have content that is laser targeted to your advertisers, chose a KW that has historically large payouts, and a strong past history in Google trends, and then ensure proper ad placement/type. Avoid banner ads, text ads only. The top left of the page is the "hottest" area for clicks. Make the ads seem like a natural part of the "feel" of the site. In other words, make the ad seem not like an ad but within the bounds of the Adsense TOS.

Your going to need to filter low paying ads. Add sites like msn, google, archives.com, pebble.com, yellowpages.com, yahoo, ask, ebay, etc to the adfilter and stop showing ads for these low paying advertisers. Use the adsense preview tool (internet explorer) for help in finding the low paying ads.

Hit me up in pm and I will help you find these ads on your customer site if you want. Going to bed shortly, but will be on here tomorrow and am more than glad to help you.

Possibly have content related to the niche with the high paying keywords, use the keyword tool for this.

Also try to find sites that display these high paying keywords in your niche and try to mimic their design/ content.

Like twilightofidols already said above, there's a lot of action happening behind the curtains which generally determine the CPC for the campaign that's running on a website. Google's ad system relies heavily on a contextual advertising system, which does not only include relevant on page content but also the user's previous search/buy history. Hence an iPhone add will be displayed to the visitor if he showed interest for the product, even though he's reading something else.

Considering the earnings you mentioned, your client is definitely not a premium publisher so there's no account manager assigned to the account. When they assign you an AM you will be able to negotiate what type of ads will be displayed and at what CPC.

Since 'pdf converter' or 'online casino games' companies pay for Google ads less than Apple, you can imagine that you won't see that type of ads on WSJ or CNET. They are cheap and they will be displayed using 'cheap' publishers.

Here is what I think I should do.

    1. Find out which ad block on the page is making the most.
    2. Put that ad in all the ad spots where ads are
    3. block all the lowest % impressions / earning ads

    Thoughts?

Don't know if it's possible, but check Wayback machine for that day and see if the ad is there. It's a snapshot of the page, so I guess it could be there.

1- it is very hard to define lowest paying keywords/websites.

2- it is also hard to guess high paying keywords (although it may seem so easy using GKWT).

3- think a bit different. real life example: A big firm commercial will be published full page on NYT and on a local newspaper of a small city. Do you think both will be paid same amount?

4- analyze those websites well. placement, colors, blending with the content, using the appropriate ad sizes, using text only or image ads.. all these factors have impact lol.

Search highest paying and low compitition adword keywords. You can get good cpc rate if you can get visitors with that keywords.
