HubPages CEO on Google's Panda algorithm: SEO doesn't work!!!

I think the problem is that Google is a company, so it will do whatever it takes to make more money. But this sucks for us because we all use Google, so they can do whatever they want. I hope more and more better alternatives come up quick. It's not good for Google to have so much power over the internet.

Thanks for that intersting post. I think that hubpages using subdomains is helping improve their traffic. Don't forget that Panda algorithm is just a complicated formula, and not some magical beast that can detect spam! SEO is about staying one step ahead... if possible

I completely agree. Moreover, it might help to change your perspective in order to see the value in the constant alterations of that formula. Think of it as analogous to the tax code and IM as the tax attorneys, tax accountants and bookkeepers who have become necessities rather than burdens. (yes they can be both, depending on where you sit) The more G moves the ball, the more difficult it makes it for the 7 Billion people on the planet, and therefore despite making it more difficult for us as well, we're more likely to understand what kind of changes to make in order to keep up. Ultimately, 99% of the people out there will give up and, Viola...you're suddenly in much higher demand becasue you have a skill and can navigate a landscape that only 1% of the people out there can navigate with you.

To bring the analogy full circle, this means you can take full advantage of 99% of the people out there and the largess that accompanies them to the benefit of your own accountant and those helping you manage your business.

BTW...after re-reading, i noticed that my use of the words "you" and "your" might imply that I was somehow speaking directly to Slim as quoted. I was not. I was echoing his thoughts and using "you" in the indirect second person.

Interesting. The motto of Panda is really 'don't all your eggs in one basket.' Diversity is the key: IP backlink diversity, the sites on which you're putting them. Moreover, it's safer to have income coming from offline methods as well as online, because Google is in a position of enormous power online, and can break any site on a whim. Don't let it happen to you!

here is an interesting tid-bit:

Code:
The only thing that seems to work is converting to sub-domains for each author. We think it?s because then Google can treat each sub-domain separately. We are one of very few sites that was hit that is actually starting to grow again.

and thats exactly what i had been doing since i started im !

Well it just means that it separates the serious IM's from the kiddies. You've got to put a lot more effort into SEO now which tbh I kinda see as a good thing, there's less competition!
But I do dislike the fact that some peoples careers are essentially in the hands of Google and who knows what devastating algorithm updates are yet to come. Someone needs to come in and balance out the huge market share that Google has!

- Google's Blogger has been unaffected by Panda. [This means nothing was done to improve quality of content and Blogger hosts a huge number of spam sites because it's so easy to automate the publishing of spam websites.]
I feel like saying... I TOLD YOU SO :P

Blogger even gets indexed with 0 backlinks... google is pure evil at times!!

Google frankly is slowly killing other blogging platforms so that blogger gets more users and google makes more money... its pure fucking evil! ..

So we could just have one domain and use subdomains instead of buying one for every microniche website without any penalties

Onpage SEO still works, that's fact.

You can optimize content for a better ranking, restructure website metrics, and extend you textual content.

Its all about social backlinking and using Google platforms nowdays. Not that hard to figure out, but it is a pain in the arse to blackhat it properly.

Thanks for the article, it was an eye opener. I haven't really been worried about the Panda updates, because Google placement isn't the focal point of my business. But it's mind boggling to see how much other companies completely rely on Google. And how much their companies were affected.

I don't blame Google at all. Of course Google is out to make as much of a profit as they can. They're running a business. The fault lies in companies completely relying on Google's traffic. I don't understand a company placing that much trust in another company. That's like opening a business with only 1 client.

It really drives home the saying " Don't keep all your eggs in 1 basket."

write more about google and its services on your website and how much you love them

trust me it works :)

That looked like one big "Woah as me" article by the CEO of Hubpages.

They had it good while it lasted, now you need to innovate, test and figure out what the fuck to do next.

They complain that Google doesn't go out and tell them their algorithm and tell them "what they can do to fix the problem"? Sure....Give Hubpages the competitive advantage because their business was hurt by a search engine algorithm update.

Fuck that's a brutal letter to read, no wonder they are in the shitter if that's who've they got in charge.

Now this is helpful, I am building some sites on sub domains to see how are they working

Funny,
my completely spammed out sites (several medium comp keywords that make >$300/day) all with blog comments and social bookmarks... seem to have missed this memo.

In fact, google seems to have missed this memo as well, otherwise my websites wouldn't be #1 for every major keyword and about 1000 long tails with no real effort.

A lot of my weebly, squidoo, etc links do VERY well in rankings with pyramids above them (many of them rank in the top 5 for a lot of long tails)
Perhaps the issue is that hubpages is a content nazi and doesn't know what good content looks like. They delete anything that they "think" is promotional... which is the only reason people post on these sites in the first place.

I don't think that Google Panda is the end of SEO, Panda was used to eliminate bad content and get better quality sites a better place in the SERPs. That is what we all aim to do in SEO as well, right? So Panda is for only strong and reliable sites and not the crappy ones.
