I'm trying to promote an auto body shop: Hillsboro body and paint.

One way links form other body shops around the country would help in the SERPS, I think.

So, I create a directory with body shops from all 50 states. I populate it with about 100 shops initially.

Then I email 10 shops a day with a link request. Place this link (anchortext/url to Hillsboro body/paint) on your site and we'll add you to the directory.

BTW, yes the directory will be hosted on a separate class C subnet than the Hillsboro site.

Do you think this is worth the time involved? Are there better uses of my time?

Yes, and this is what most of the big guns do.

The more you talk about it, the more people are going to do it...

    Okay.

But I might start making lots of these directories to promote my customers' sites.

I don't want to start hosting 10s of directories on the same IP. Google might catch on make the connection between my directories and the sites I promote.

Is there are really easy/cheap way to create directories on free hosts? With unique URLs?

    Nice!

    I'll do that.

But I like the idea of getting one way links from established sites in my niche. Google seems to be devaluing 2.0 sites and favoring established, aged sites.

Another way to do it is create a brief ebook ("how to get more customers to your body shop from the Internet it 2010") or a helpful application (body shop estimating software) and offer it in exchange for a link.
