    Hello everyone,

i believe many here either suffer from ADHD/ADD or know someone who suffers from this. This problem is a double edged sword.
The HD part means hyperfocus disorder which means the ability to concentrate on a single problem for hours without caring for anything else. The AD part means attention disorder i.e. inability to work on anything with focus.

i have been suffering from this and want to turn this weakness into my strength.

Can you guys help me in finding some course or some ways to focus on what i need to do rather than shifting between different things/thoughts.

I have ADD. I have difficulties in focussing on 1 website.. I just have to much ideas spooking around in my head.

Since a few months I have been working on my organization and planning... because I didn't make any progress in my projects and I never learned how to plan.

You should get help from a psychiatrist, and try ritalin for a while.. It might help you with your planning.. and getting things done. It did for me.

Never give up and you WILL turn your weakness in your strenght, because the ability to hyperfocus is an advantage.

Thanks a lot wiz, but my reason for calling for help here was to get responses from the people on this forum and not from google.
Trust me, i have read a lot on the subject with the help of google and there is nothing which i could implement to focus on important things.

    Hi,

Thanks a lot. i have thought of going to a psychiatrist but could never summon the courage to take help on this as a psychiatrist visit is still considered taboo in india.

Anyways, can you take ritalin without prescription ( i mean does it have any side effects )

ADHD = Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A person with ADHD couldn't focus and is hyper all the time.
If you're still able to focus, then you probably do not have ADHD.

go to library.nu and find some books. I'm doing the same thing too. I believe I can live with it using behavioral therapy and without drug.

It's not all of the time, it's most of the time. Hyperfocus exists, and is partly why I am so good/talented at things that interest me and I openly admit that things that do not interest me are synonymous with being my weaknesses.

You have to figure out what really interests you, and set up things around you that allows you to dedicate your focus on what you are doing. I hired a maid because I got tired of being bitched at for not switching over the laundry, or vacuum the floor. Unfortunately, this doesn't always equate to making money like people believe it does. People assume because they really like making money that they will hyperfocus on all of the small tasks like SEO that eventually result in making money.

But yeah, the hyperactivity part of the "disorder" isn't the same as "hyperfocus" - when your thoughts race around and you have a swam or ideas or things you would like to do all at once, then thats a form of hyperactivity. I have to get up and walk around after about 20 or 30 minutes of working on something or else it becomes all I can really think about.

yes, this is what i am talking about. i am able to hyperfocus on things that i find interesting but not on the things which are boring. unfortunately, seo is really boring.

I agree with BlackSeng, and is exactly what I've always heard it was. "Hyper Focus" for ADHD sounds like an Oxymoron.

I got diagnosed with ADD a little over a month ago and I notice a huge difference when I am taking my medicine. I am able to multitask so much better. I can actually clean and organize my room/office and talk at the same time and know whats going on and comprehend everything. It's amazing but when I don't take the meds I slack off big time. I am taking ritilin at 20 mg.

ADHD-PI here. Basically the same problems concentrating in things I find uninteresting/boring. On the other hand, I like lots of things, so school wasn't really bad.

At my current job, my work is mainly creative (animation, motion graphics, visual fx) but there are other tasks that I find too repetitive and therefore I tend to lose focus fast, so I've been prescribed Methylphenidate, and I take it mon-to-fri. It really makes me hyper focused on everything, but the side effects are lack of appetite (I have several alarms programmed on my BB to remind me when to eat) and change of mood - I become too serious, even though I don't really notice, to the extent that people I work with think I'm somewhat bipolar when we meet on weekends or holidays, since I don't take any methylphenidate on those days, and they're surprised by my true personality (outgoing and a lot more expressive).

So, in my case, medication has really helped (work wise).

Methylphenidate is basically Ritalin. I take the 20mg/slow release one.

Same here, 2 or 3 pills of 10 mg each day when I'm working on projects. I forgot to take them today and that's the reason why I'm seeking distraction now, lol...

Methylphenidate = the substance in ritalin

And yes I have the same sideaffects as you, some days I am really not in a good humor because of the pills... and my appetite is also way lower then before..

Just take them when you need them...:)

Inability to focus in just one way ADHD will hurt you. Impulsiveness is equally disadvantageous, causing you to take hasty actions/decisions that you shouldn't have. Medications is indeed the way to go, accompanied by lifestyle changes.

OP: You mentioned that you are in India. That is another roadblock as Ritalin is not allowed/available there. The only medicine available in India that uses "Methylphenidate" is "ADDwise" by Sunpharma. This being a controlled drug, you need a prescription from a psychiatrist- otherwise you would not be able to buy it.

And yet another roadblock is the lack of awareness about ADHD in India as compared to US. Be prepared to meet psychiatrists or psychologist who have not even heard of the term before. My guess is that you would need to consult at least 3-4 different doctors before finding one who understand the condition and would prescribe the right medicine that would work for you.

Best of luck, long road ahead:)

Meanwhile, try reading good books on the subject like this one:
    Code:
    http://www.amazon.com/Delivered-Distraction-Getting-Attention-Disorder/dp/0345442318/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1306326477&sr=1-1
Buy it from Flipkart and you should get it within 25 working days.
