I have a couple of sites that where holding 1-2 positions for various terms. These are obscure niches where the top 10 is dominated by aged authoritive sites with thousands of links to each page so there's not much competition in terms of marketers since these monsters scare them off (talk about leaving money on the table 
) so the rankings pretty much stay the same. I haven't built a single backlink once they reached the top in the Serps. Recently though, they have been losing rank (say about 4-5 spots), I did some investigating and the cause MIGHT be link-erosion (most of links lost where kinda spammy, not the quality ones) or not updating the sites in quite a while (5 months), that's a pretty big drop from not updating the sites...
Now, for those that experienced this, how did/would you deal with this? If I didn't care much for these sites I would just experiment, though I kinda regret letting them sit for so long.
