My advice would be to move away from short term projects or flimsy projects. Microsites are falling out of favour and are being replaced with authority sites for a lot of IMers. This makes sense; the authority sites have multiple advantages. Firstly, they are more likely to survive and prosper in Google. Secondly, they get repeat hits once discovered and the content is of a high quality so it can be marketed in multiple ways (such as social sharing). You can also build an email list and constantly market to your faithful.
This is how I've restructured my marketing efforts; I'm focusing on building high quality assets rather than building little microsites.
Also, variation is always the key in terms of driving traffic to a site.
And yes; find other projects outside of IM to invest in. Build a diversified portfolio.
That is totally my goal too
