How would you *SAFELY* backlink a web shop?

Got a friend with a web shop in a non-English speaking market and he has now asked me for some SEO help. My thinking is to rank the main page, as well as individual product pages. However, how do I go about doing the actual backlinking in a safe way? I don't wanna ruin the poor guy's business. :)

I want to do this as safely as possible, but still do it somewhat blackhat. The main issue is backlinking the product pages, I need to automate this somehow, without using obvious junk. And doing it manually is simply not an option, due to the sheer amount of products.

So, anyone got any suggestions? Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

I would suggest doing it manualy. Step by step.
 
It depends on your budget. But i would consider media buys instead of a SEO linking.
 
I don't see how can a media buy help with SEO.
My understanding of the OP was that they wish to rise in the SERP.

I'd go with a hybrid approach:
- some manual work: create a network of your 1st-tier support sites, blogs, web properties
- some auto work: buy some quality backlinking campaigns, there are some on this forum too

1:automation and safety never works together.
2:there is no safe heaven strategy in SEO 2013, unless its a shop owned by Laday gaga :), So possibly try guest blogging on very high quality blogs in your niche and always have good share on social signals(real ones), or try some natural ways to build like
-contest link building
-building relevant network to power your shop in smart way
-Buy some super relevant links

or

Automated backlinking campaigns can be perfectly safe you just have to be smart about it.

At the end of the day you run a business and you need to be efficient aka you need automation.

1. Build your 1-st tier defense line of manual, high quality properties with quality content
2. Get some quality link building campaigns and link to your 1st tier properties. If you're bolder you can also link to your money site for better effect.
 
My thoughts:

- Blogger outreach. What products do you have? you may want to outreach mom bloggers as they are very good ambassadors of products. You will need to pay them though.

- Web 2.0 sites. Look for services here on BHW.

Add some social to it.
- Pinterest
- Instagram
- Facebook
-Twitter
-Google Plus

Don't forget to link on the website's category pages.

It's a non-English speaking market so I assumed your target customers are from your local area? If so, do Local SEO.
Claim the business on Google+ Local, Set up a Google plus page and then get citations. Put NAP (Name, Address, Phone) on the website sitewide (footer or sidebar will do). Name, Address, Phone number should be exactly the same for all of your citations.

Thanks guys. Looks like I have no choice but to do some manual work. And I fucking HATE work. :D

Anyone else got any other suggestions, which hopefully don't involve manual work? :)
 
Oder 100 WEB 2.0's with atleast 1 article in it. Put all 100 WEB 1 in GSA and blast it with 4 tired links. To dilute backlink profiles head BST and order few social links, high PR low OBL comments, Video links, REAL guest posts, document links, and all other link type which you feel its hard to get a link and people doing it manually. Make sure your link distribution is like 100 WEB 2/200 other link types. Don't blast other links in GSA except WEB 2.
Watch out for anchor link diversification. Do the same for low competitive inner pages, just reduce backlinks here.

Best way for ecommerce is to hold a contest.
To participate in the contest people will need to motivate why they should picked winners.

If you want, just tell them to link to homepage somewhere in the post.
But if you wanna play safe, let them pick between a few products and make them link to the product they want if they win..
 
That is an excelent idea. I am starting some shops myself.
Meant that as a reply to the above post.
 
Also wanna add.
Coupon and contest sites are great too.
Specially in traffic generation.
 
if you want website traffic than you need social media, youtube videos for your products reviews, coupons, blogs etc to get done useful whitehat backlinks for your keywords
