How useful are social bookmarking scripts on websites?

The question is in title. I mean the scripts that are normally located at blogs or forums where visitors can fast bookmark a link at social bookmarking sites.
I always thought why someone should use this but obvious its used by many webmasters. So how useful is this?
If you place it the normal way like everyone do how many visitors out of thousand will bookmark?

Id be interested to know numbers on it as well, but I imagine it's probably on a lot of sites simply because "it couldnt hurt."

Yes, but in my case I had to first persuade the one with the website because it would change the website-layout. So it would be useful to know if it is useful...

A tweetmeme button is much better than a simple tweet this icon, you can relate this to other unique way of increasing social bookmarking intent of visitors

But how manye users are using such things?

Im asking because I want to know if its worth enough to implement this. If I would like to implement i had to convince the websiteowner that such buttons should change the look of the website. So is there a rule maybe "Out of 1000 visitors 1 is bookmarking" or similar? Or is it used even less?
