Thumbs up for Google Analytics, that's actually most widely spread, used and trusted tool to measure traffic to your website. A lot of SEO tools offer to fetch data from your Analytics account, which is quite handy cause you can have rank monitoring, keyword analysis, reports on traffic all in one place.

analytics obviously, but its interesting coz I havent read much about analytics for forums, not sure how they work, but I reckon theres a good argument to make the forums URL friendly so you can recognise the content of each page

its funny cos forum experts always told me there made no difference if the urls were gibberish or friendly, but in analytics it surely makes a difference, doesnt it?

For dark social traffic, be sure that you're using proper UTM tagging. Otherwise, these hits won't pass back things like referral headers. You can see the aggregate of your UTM parameters and any other analytics in GA, as many others have said.
