I have two suggestions

(a) Dont go for more than 3 Words at any cost..
(b) Pour it with informative content (copy scape passed)

And then there's no difference between a normal or EMD Domain...

I think the 3/4 page websites with EMDs won't work anymore

I think EMDs power have been significantly reduced, there is a slight boost but insignificant, I say content and backlinks are way more important.

I still have an easier time ranking EMDs but with enough backlinks a non-EMD is perfectly fine of course.
