This is a method I have been using for the last year. It works most of the time. I have used it to get links from sites like huffington post, ijr, theguardian, nytimes etc.
Step 1. Say your competitor has the domain xxx.com, look to see if theres another version available, such as .org or .net. Register it and build it out to look similar to the competitors site.
Step 2. Find your competitors backlinks.
Step 3. Email the webmaster whos linking to your competitor, say something like
''Good afternoon, I noticed you have an article linking to my website and I wanted to let you know that the domain is being switched over to the .org version soon and was wondering if you could link to that site instead as the .com version will no longer be available''.
Most of the time they will change them, I have gotten around 10 of my competitors high authority backlinks this way. After aquiring the links, keep the site as a pbn or 301 it to your money site.
