In addition to wblteam; depending on which CMS you use there are probably some free SEO plugins that will make your life easier. For instance Yoast Plugin for Wordpress which is a great free tool for on-page optimization.

Like wlbteam stated; it all starts with keyword research → optimization → linkbuilding

5) Content Criteria ? It needs to be with useful and helpful content.
6) Links - Many ways you can do and depends on competition. I mix with PBN, Guest Post, Web 2.0, Infographics etc.

Well the first place to start is to find out which keywords you want to target. If you're starting with a complete website you can check if you're already receiving traffic for certain keywords. A good place to start is loading your website into Semrush and checking your top performing keywords, next take a look in Google Webmaster Tools. The next step is to find keywords you will be targetting. This can be done different ways so I won't go into this right now, if you found any interesting terms that you're already ranking for add these to your plan. Now you know which keywords you are going to target, you'll want to measure your progress. You can do this by loading your keywords and domain into a rank tracker. It will show the rankings for these tersm over time.

The second step will be on-page SEO. You'll want to learn how to optimise your current content, and apply this knowledge to any new content that you add to your website. Again, there's plenty of detailed information available on this topic, for example PHPBuilt's post.

After you're convinced your on-page is spot on, and this is resulting in better rankings (if it doesn't that usually means it isn't), the next thing to do is off-site SEO aka link building.

Again, there's plenty of information available on these topics, so I kept my answer pretty vague; if there's anything more specific you want to know just ask

Once the basics as mentioned above are in, then i prefer reading a lot about SEO from the major journals and forums like BHW. They keep you updated, you cannot lose your shirt in this game so keeping oneself updated is very essential.

Mix them up as much as you can. Diversity is king! Be creative - just make sure the sites where you place your links are related to your niche

Find keyword
Write quality content
Create a strong social media base along with link building via PBN!

Content is the SEO King, make sure you have fresh updated articles in your niche, work on your Social Media accounts to get people talking about your site, and your articles, and try and build good partnerships with other site owners.

First Anchor Ratio:

1. Naked URL
2. Branded Keywords
3. Generic Keywords
4. Lot of LSI Keywords
5. Exact Match [Not more than 10%]

For Link Building:

1. Make social profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc with brand name.
2. Send a lot of social signals to your website
3. Now its time for web 2.0 use only 10 to 15 popular platforms and create web 2.0 with branded and LSI names. Better to use expired web 2.0s if you are lucky to find in your niche.
4. List your site to different popular and reputed business listing websites mostly they accept naked URL which is good for new website such as merchandise, hotfrog etc
5. Create some social bookmarks with LSI keywords only on popular websites.
6. Profiles also play a good role for anchor dilution use only PR 6+ sites for profiling and try to use your brand name as a user of profile.
7. Guest posts on popular and niche relevant websites.

When your website anchor profile flooded with different LSI, Generic and Branded keywords then purchase some PBN posts or sape links with exact match and partial match keywords/anchors.

The time period of link building should 1 to 2 month and drip-feed as much as your can.

If I were starting out again, I'd focus on finding the top sites in my niche and developing relationships with them

I'd work with existing pools of audiences in my niche and figure out their needs.

I'll then put my site and content plans based on the two sources of information above.

Remember: SEO has changed ... 2016 is sure to pack some nasty algo surprises so....... build your empire on the solid rock of QUALITY.

I would like to add, Social Media presence. Right from scratch, start spreading your word of mouth through FB page.
The most important thing you should know is the content while fetching contextual backlinks. Spread value to get value.

another option is to buy a few fiverr gigs thats what has worked for me.

You can also try w3 school's SEO tutorial and many useful tutorial about SEO . There are many resources online. Free and paid .
