I've built forums in the past, some successful, some not.

Yes they are a lot of work initially, especially getting active members, however they can be extremely profitable -- if you're willing to be patient. Most people aren't patient enough to effectively run, maintain, and promote a forum.

As for software, I used to be a vBulletin junkie, however I now prefer MyBB. Version 1.6 was recently released. You can find it at mybb.com

All this talk of forums kinda makes me want to start another one.

How to know fake profiles or real 500 active users

By checking last activity of a user and their posts

Its a good idea to throw some incentives to make them active and work (create content) for you

Offer people premium membership for free. Make it like have a minimum of 25posts and NO SPAM. So lets say you offer 50 people paid membership for free
