    The WP Security Scan and Password protecting the admin areas with a http popup are good tips, thanks, will check them out.

    a few months ago hackers were scanning my site for an admin page. i also get hack attacks from the ukraine and russia fairly regulary.

    one thing i recently did was to change the setting on my public_html folder from 755 to 754. this stops the 'world executable' option (why would you permit outsiders to execute scripts???) from being used. i'm not sure if it will matter but it's worth a shot.

    also hostgator is now setting all public_html folders (on new accounts) to 750 by default. i don't know about that setting since it stops 'world readable'.
