Hi there,

I have just started a SEO business and one of my customer is asking very precise questions. My quotation is based on 5h a month but it is hard to reply to the below :

- How many page you can optimize per month ? (how can I give a number as each page are different ?)
- How many link you will create per month ? (same as above, I don't know in advance)

From my prospective it seems difficult to answer those questions, specially the 2nd. Any idea to help to sort it out ?

Thanks in advance.

Charge him by the amount of pages you'll be optimizing
and charge him by the amount of links
That way you'll have a defined amount and he'll be happy

Exactly - or give him the option -

you can do it per page and per link - pay as you go type structure. Make this work out more expensive.
Or you can do it on a fixed fee basis and performance basis - you don't give a specific number of links or pages optimized but you are working towards ranking x number of keywords.
You estimate that in 3 months you can have x% improvement or x% increase in traffic and if he is happy he continues if he is not happy he can stop after that trial period.

Just explain the nature of SEO as well that it is not a clear science, it needs to be assessed / modified / adapted as you go along.

You should define exact stuff they can for the money instead of a 5h a month thing.

If you have problems with a client right now, maybe, it's better to not work with this client at all? Just saying... it can save your time

Thanks for your help !
Based on the previous work I gave to my customer a estimation of what I will do for him. But as some of you said, SEO is not a exact science and some customers could not understand that :)

I'd be cautious on quoting him links per month. You're not a link seller, you're an SEO expert. He's paying for expertise, not bulk links. The volume of links SHOULD naturally vary month to month because the cost/time required for various link types and strategies. If he just wants links shit at his site go to Fiverr.

Well ... that's a good point. I sent an estimation to my customer but I agree with you. If he send me other questions like number of links/blog comments etc I will explain him what you've said. Thanks !

Almost on the money here. I should add you must get into a contract , otherwise you can be challenged over the dues, as the customer is very specific about his orders.

This is exactly right IMO.

If all you need is ONE link to get him to #1, you'll only place one link. SEO is a service, you can't pre-charge for 10 hamburgers and 20 fries.
