yes i agree with the OP.
i made a free blog on wordpress dot com and posted a few quality posts on my low competitive keywords got by keyword planner. As result i saw second page rankings on day 5. built a few backlinks on high PR sites and get it on the first page. i am happy now the rank thereof is stable.

I certainly think that link building is one of the most important mechanics in ranking high.

I will suggest going with LONG TAILED keywords and in VERY LOW SEO COMPETITION.
Make a long list of them and try to update content at least 1 article/day (article's length should be at least 700 words, ideally is over 1000 words)
PS: however, I don't think you can rank with ONPAGE seo only, inevitably, you will soon realize that you should drop some high quality backlinks to see the ranking starts jumping.

Ranking with just quality content though I do believe is possible may also take a lot more time. Working quality content with SEO is one way to achieve results a little quicker.

Quality content will work to help rank but without sharing it somehow it may take a long time to see any results. Always wise to work two or more methods together rather than just using one method and hoping it works.

Whats good for humans is deadly for robots.

If you want good content (for humans) make sure to backup it with shitload of backlinks. Because robots are good when it comes to counting and are not always as good when it comes to understanding.
