Google controls an estimated 85% of the global search market. This is why so much attention is placed on optimizing your website for Google's algorithm in particular.

However, there is one catch: SEO is known for taking a long time to start paying off. Typically, it takes 6 to 12 months to see a return on your investment.

Fortunately, there are several tactics you can employ to generate "fast wins," or results in a matter of weeks or months.
Stay tuned to learn how to rank high in Google using link building, Google Search Console, and "striking distance" keywords.

1. To ensure your website is Google-friendly, use Google Search Console.
The most effective SEO strategy in the world will be useless if Google cannot see your website. You can utilize Google Search Console to ensure that Google can discover, crawl, and index your site.

To begin, you must first confirm ownership of your website or websites. There are numerous methods for doing this, but the most frequent is to copy and paste a Google code into your CMS, such as WordPress.
From there, you’ll want to take a look at the Index Coverage Report.

It will display the pages of your website that Google was able to index. You'll also see any pages that couldn't be indexed and any problems that occurred.

If Google was unable to index your website, read the error report carefully. It will inform you of what went wrong and when it occurred in the process (discovery, crawl, and index).
Common mistakes to avoid include:
  • Pages marked as ‘noindex.’
  • Blocked by robots.txt file
  • Server errors (5xx)
  • Redirect and 404 errors
  • Crawl issues
Resolve these issues as soon as possible so that your Web pages can begin to appear on Google again. That is a sure-fire approach to noticing an immediate increase in traffic, especially if the pages with problems are effectively optimized.

In addition to the Index Coverage Report, you should review the Mobile Usability Report to ensure your website is mobile-friendly.

It will notify you if your website has any concerns with mobile visibility.

If you do wind up resolving mistakes and adding new pages or websites, Google can crawl a website in a few days to a few weeks, which may be longer than you're ready to wait.

If this is the case, you can request a force crawl, which is a sped-up variation of a standard crawl. This means you won't have to wait up to a week for your Web pages to appear in Google search results.

2. Use long-tail keywords with specific locations for local SEO.
For your target keywords, use local modifiers such as city, state, or area. Here are a couple such examples:
  • Los Angeles's Top Dentists
  • California tax advice
  • Pacific Northwest Loan Officers
As you can see, each of these long-tail keywords involves a unique location, thus "localizing" the search. Local SEO has various advantages, including the ability to achieve immediate results when done correctly. In fact, if you already have a claimed Google Business Profile listing, you should expect to see benefits in 4 to 8 weeks.

3. Find Keywords Within "Striking Distance" of Your Existing Pages' Search Rankings
If you already have high-quality content that isn't on the first page of SERPs but is at the top of the second page, you're close to generating visitors. This scenario is ideal for generating "quick wins" that will help you rank quickly on Google.

You can find out which keywords you're almost ranking for on Google Search Console by performing a few reports. You can then make the necessary changes to boost your PageRank. When done correctly, effects can be seen in as little as three days.
The beauty of this method is that you won't need to do any keyword research because Google Analytics will do it for you.

There's also no need to go looking for competitive keywords because the ones you find will already be ranking on Google.

Here's an explanation of how it works.
In Google Analytics, run the query report.

The first step is to launch Google Analytics and run the Queries Report. Before you begin, ensure that you have linked Google Analytics with Google Search Console.
To run the report, open Google Analytics and navigate to Acquisition > Search Engine Optimization > Queries.

Here's a breakdown of each metric you'll encounter.
The Queries report will display all of the terms for which you presently rank under Search Query. It also shows your Impressions (the number of times you appear in Google for each phrase), Clicks (the number of visitors you received for each keyword), Click-Through Rate (the percentage of users who clicked on your link when it appeared), and Average Position (your spot in the Google rankings).

If there isn't much data on the report, try expanding the date range. Keep in mind that Google Analytics is usually two days behind when entering dates for the Queries Report.

To find keywords that are within striking distance, use an advanced filter.
The objective is to filter the report so that it only reveals keywords for which you rank but not very well.

You want to view all of the terms that rank at the top of Google's page two. These have the greatest potential for ranking improvement with a few easy changes.

If you can get on the first page, you'll get a quick bump in traffic that will keep you going until your other SEO efforts kick in.

To locate these magical keywords, use an advanced filter on the Queries report's Average Position column. You'll see a blue link labeled "Advanced" at the top of the page's filter box. Click it to get the advanced filter options.

Filter the report to show only queries with an average position greater than 10. This ensures that you only see keywords that rank high on page two and are close to ranking on page one. In other words, these keywords are just below a significant SEO threshold.

Sort the report so that keywords related to striking distance appear at the top.
Next, sort the report such that the keywords ranked 10 and 11 appear at the top of the page. It's as simple as clicking twice on the Average Position column.

The first click sorts the report based on the filter, while the second click prioritizes the 10s and 11s.

Don't forget to save this report so you can easily retrieve it in the future. You should save it with the filter applied so you don't have to repeat the process. To do so, go to the top and click Save next to the floppy-disc icon. Make sure to give it a unique name so you don't confuse it with the original.

Examine your keywords for striking distance.

Once you've sorted your report for your striking distance keywords, it's time to investigate them. You'll want to select keywords that are relevant to your brand and avoid those that aren't.

You'll notice that there are a lot of unusual key words in the report.

That is very natural, so there is no need to panic.

You did not run the report incorrectly; it is all too typical for websites to rank for bizarre terms on occasion. Simply skip over the weird terms to get to the valuable ones.

High-quality keywords have a high level of searcher intent. In general, three forms of purpose are most important for SEO:
  • Informational. These keywords signify the users are after information, which is useful for content marketing. (i.e., how to lose weight)
  • Transactional. If a keyword is transactional, it means the user has buyer intent. (i.e., dentists in Los Angeles)
  • Navigational. A keyword is navigational when the user wants to go directly to a website (i.e., Sam’s Guitar Shop).
Make a list of keywords that are within striking distance and show one of the sorts of intent shown above.

Optimize your existing content with keywords that are within striking distance.

Now that you've determined which key phrases are on the verge of ranking higher, it's time to push them over the top.

This entails utilizing on-page SEO techniques to optimize your existing content with these keywords. As a general rule, the keyword should appear in:
  • The meta description and title tag
  • The headings (particularly the H1)
  • The body text
If you're only ranking on page two, chances are the term isn't appearing in these crucial areas. Use the term at least three to seven times throughout the article, preferably inside the first 100 words.

It is also critical not to overlook your metadata. Your keywords must appear in your title tags and meta descriptions.

Check back in a few days.
If the original page was not effectively optimized, even minor adjustments can have a significant impact. The good thing is that you can rinse and repeat this process as often as you wish.

Some pages may necessitate a minor revamp rather than a few adjustments and keyword placements. In either case, you should be able to see the benefits of your work within a few days.

You should not invest in SEO unless you are prepared to make a long-term commitment. However, there are ways to accelerate the process, such as the approaches described in this article.

Not all tactics are equally fast, but if you mix them all, you'll get consistent results from your SEO efforts.
