Id like to start a conversation about ranking KW's locally.

Lets use the city "New York" as an example.
I want to rank for KW's in New York, but no necessarily for "New York" in the KW. If this makes sense.

Does Google give any considerations to location when "New York" is not in the search term?

I have found many long tail KW's i want to rank for in my city using the keyword planner that dont have "New York" in the search term.

Besides basic on page SEO, what can I add to my content to rank locally? Would Using the City in the URL help even if its not in the search term?

I've Done lots of citations and backlinks for my Homepage and Main KW. This is mainly for those Long tails, added pages. Thx for any feedback I can get.

Google for the most part knows a users location, and delivers local results (especially for services that are inherently location-related - nail salons, restaurants, locksmiths, etc).

A search by someone in NYC for "locksmiths new york city" would produce a very similar set of results as a search for "locksmiths".

All you need to do is to optimize for keyword+city, and Google will deliver it when relevant, even if the user only searches 'keyword'.

First off thank you. So how would go about ranking “need a locksmith fast” in New York? Just try to rank the city in every search term ex: “need a locksmith fast in New York”?

My guess is that something like "emergency locksmiths" has more search volume than "need a locksmith fast"... so that's why you start with basic keyword research and build a plan from there.

If you are creating local landing page for say "New York" and your key word is "dry cleaner", you should be using "New York dry cleaner" as the keyword on that page. Variations of the main keyword should be used as well like, "NYC dry cleaner", "dry cleaner in New York" and so on.

I recently targeted a page in Los Angeles. I used "LA" and "L.A." also. The page ranks well (first page) for all those terms organically and the business is located 90 miles outside of LA.
