If I have 5 keywords I'd like to rank for, should I promote a specific deeplink for each specific keyword? Or, is it better to promote the homepage for all keywords?

I do most of my link building on the deep link however I also build links for that keyword on the home page as it does help too.

I think it will be better if you work for 2-3 keywords for your home page.
And use other keywords to rank for your inner pages.

I link build for 20 keyprases on my home page. However they all have my main keyword in the phrase.

Great of getting extra long tail and loads of rankings you don't link build for. creates loads of variations.
