So what makes your URL rank for a long-tail keywords? Is it their presence in the text content? Is it links? It's impractical to have a many link anchors - usually, the anchors are done only for a couple highest volume keywords. But on one of my sites 60% of traffic comes from keywords besides the top two.

You definitely want to try and rank for long tail keywords. You rank them the same as you would any other keyword but typically the competition is going to be less.

Yes he is correct! You need a same strategy like you do for others but competition is less, you will rank in short period of time!
It can't be the same strategy because it's not practical to build backlinks for 2000 different anchor texts.

umm yes it is, its called using automation tools, ie SB, AMR, SENX, ZP, BMD, TBS whatever you have at your disposal, do it for one keyword and scale it up 2k times

Is it better to create individual pages for long tail keywords optimizing the url and title or is it better to optimize the main page for the main keyword and backlink with main keyword and long tails as anchor. I see most have a main page and backlink with main and longtails.
keeping in mind if a site has 5 main keywords and a possible 10 long tail keywords for each main, what would be better?

thats pretty common. often higher.
these days the anchors should be de-optimized anyway. So you wouldn't necessarily go building backlink anchors for every long tail you seek.

You are lucky that you have found out this so early.. !! most people never analyze where and what is bringing them traffic...
You should start hitting long tail immediately... those will be easier to rank as well..

It will mostly come down to link anchor text. Google has been fighting back against this kind of strategy though. Unless you have substantial content to match each location, it will be viewed as doorway pages.
You will want to build up links to each of those pages and also build up the overall authority & trust of your domain. In that niche, it may take quite some time to develop a presence.
