at the end of the day branded keywords are still keywords, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Meaning, if you optimize the page for a keyword, publish quality content on it and build good links to it you will eventually rank for that keyword (this is a simplistic view of the matter since site's authority, relevancy, competition, etc will still come into play).
But the main takeaway from my point above is: optimize your (home)page for your branded keyword and build links to it. I would also recommend to add content for the page too but if it's a portfolio / business / services type of website it doesn't make sense to make the homepage like a blog post. In which case brand mentions, traffic and backlinks with branded anchors will be your best bet to rank for your branded keyword.
Spread the word far and wide about your brand as much as you can (on social media, on forums centered around the main topic of your site, use PPC if you must... do anything and everything necessary to make people aware of your brand and when people will look up your brand in google consistently for an extended period of time google will pick your brand up and stick it to the top of the SERPs since it will be obviously it's a brand that people are interested in.... And in the meantime - if you're active enough on social media, on forums, and on UGC properties like Reddit, Pinterest, etc - Google will pick up your social accounts and stick them to the top until your site's brand gets enough traction and recognition to show up at the top).
I wish there was a simpler way, but I don't think there is one...
