How to Quickly Identify a Low-Quality Proxy

A lot of proxies look clean on the surface but can ruin your projects.
Here's a quick method I personally use to check if a proxy’s worth the money:

  1. Ping Test
    Always start with a basic ping test. High ping (300ms+) usually indicates mobile or overloaded residential proxies. Solid ISP/residential proxies should ideally have < 100ms ping.
  2. Check ASN and Hostname (IPinfo or ip-api)
    Run the proxy IP through IPinfo.io or ip-api.com. Good residential proxies show real residential ISPs. DC proxies usually show something like OVH, DigitalOcean, etc. If it claims residential but shows datacenter, walk away.
  3. Blacklist Check (IPQualityScore)
    Quickly run the IP through IPQS. A proxy that's flagged here = guaranteed problems later.
  4. WebRTC & DNS Leak Test
    Go to browserleaks.com/webrtc and dnsleaktest.com. Make sure your proxy isn't leaking real DNS or WebRTC info.
  5. Manual Google Test
    Easiest trick: just google "my ip" or visit whoer.net. See what Google shows. Any weird mismatch or obvious proxy label = no-go.
You can do these tests in literally 2 minutes.

Doing your homework here saves time, money, and avoids bans later.

Mobile proxies, when managed properly, tend to pass more naturally. Real modem routing with dynamic ASN behavior mimics organic sessions better, which makes them much harder to detect,especially on sensitive platforms.

We noticed similar - pure modem-based proxies handle these checks better due to their inherent network variability and realistic behavior. Mobile routing feels more natural overall.

Absolutely, modem proxies handle those fingerprint layers far better than virtualized or static setups. For testing, we often run calibrated sessions through tools like Pixelscan or CreepJS, but also monitor behavioral consistency over burst requests. Have you come across any tools that give granular feedback on TCP/IP handshake timing or network behavior patterns?
 
You can also use ip2location.io API to check the proxy IP addresses.
 
Thanks for the share! If I may add, watch proxy uptime and stability. A proxy might pass tests but still drop a lot, which gets annoying fast. Also, check the provider reputation on forums or customer reviews.
