How to publish articles with news sites?

I've tried submitting articles to USA Today a few times, but so far no luck.

So how else could I go about getting backlinks from news sites? Considering how many of my bigger competitors have these kinds of links I feel like there's got to be a better way of going about it.

I'm a bit at a loss of what to do, and I think news articles are my best bet. Currently, I am lucky to get 1 backlink a month unless I want to pay for links from scammy sites, which I don't.

You can check for a direct seller for these kind of links,
Easily reaching out to the HAF section with the specific websites will get you several sellers for this,

And not because a single competitor got this links means they're ranking because of them or they're the best type of links to use,
It could be because of a hidden PBN, if there are other links, better on page, etc...

You should check other competitors link profiles and on page (content, silo, internal links, user search intent, etc...),
Then make your decision based on multiple cases

Unless you actually have something news worthy happening, you will have to buy these links. USA Today costs several $k. If you have the budget anything is possible but if you are competing at this level you need the bank roll to outrank them and be prepared to spend it.
 
One way is to bring news that you have got your hands exclusively. I remember 2 years back I got my hands on a report that no one knew and contradicted the leaks and rumors in the industry. I had good proof. So I posted it and then gave this tip to a few big publications. When one of them linked to my source, several more came in.
 
You can buy posts on the marketplace here I believe?
