How to optimize adsense ads placement for maximum income?

Install Microsoft heatmap tracker to se which position is the best for your layout and try to minimize number of ads displayed(fast load) that not optimal
Will try it, appreciated.

I just use their default setting because my sites' visitors access my content through mobile devices.

My click-through rate had actually improved when I used their default settings using Auto ads.

I know a lot of people think that Auto ads suck, but you have to understand how Auto ads work in Google's favor.

If Auto ads show advertising on your content in places that it knows won't get clicked, where is the money in that for Google?

It's in Google's self-interest to get Auto ads to work at an optimal level because if they don't, they're leaving money on the table.

And so far, this has worked well for me.

Most of my sites are informative, and I don't build backlinks.

All my links are natural.

So depending on how you set up your site and the niches you focus on, your experience may be different.

You need to create multiple ad unit for each placement for testing which one gives better performance.
For example you want to put ad unit to in-article first paragraph, you should give a unique name to this ad unit. So you can track/measure these ad units' performance on "Reports" panel.

I advise: less auto ads + less ad units is more revenue! It's just my experience.

I don't want to put ad on first para, but I can try on one blog see what happens.

I made 2 blocks in sidebar, top one was clicked better and 2 blocks in content, but not at the top, but on first screen, after text and image

on category pages one at the top above content

it gave the most clicks

A free advice don't enable those ads that open a pop up windows and the user needs to close it, they pay more but that's the best way to loose visitors, I learned the hard way, now I use the ones that blend with the page, the pay is low but the visitors keep coming to read the updates

Adsense Sticky Stack is a great ad to try out, also, add the Multiplex aka Matched Content ad at the end of your content, it has a high CTR.
