Never thought about it and only today, first time ever, I checked my image rankings.
So I'm wondering how I can optimise images to rank higher.
Any help would be appreciated.

Alt tag and image name - this is everything you need to do. So, make sure both of these are optimised and contain your KW.
Done that.
Google can read images so I wonder if I need to kinda modify images to make sure google understand what they are about... No?

I highly doubt that they are doing this but it’s not completely off the table. FB does it, I am sure, but an image can be related to a topic even though all the individual objects are unrelated. So, it’s kinda difficult with the vast amount of images on the internet.

I would love to know more if someone has solid info about this.

You need to make sure your image alt tags are descriptive and include relevant keywords to improve SEO.

the filename itself should be relevant and not like IMG_1234.jpg,
Relevant alt tag,
ull get better compression rate with WebP format ( it loads faster, maybe it could affect ranking. But not sure )
and dont neglect meta data ( Google's Image Metadata Guidelines )
u can use photoshop to edit meta data

Google recognizes images, that is how you're able to do image search. But image optimization largely boils down to the same thing alt text, image description and image name(which influences image URL).

Optimizing images to rank in Google, particularly in Google Images and web search results, is a powerful way to drive traffic, enhance SEO, and complement strategies like content updates, backlinking, and traffic tracking we’ve discussed.

Use descriptive filenames/ Add alt text/ Compress images for speed

Name your images well, use alt text, keep file size small, and put them near related content.

Start by giving them descriptive filenames (like blue-running-shoes.jpg) and writing clear, keyword-rich alt text. Compress images using tools like TinyPNG to improve load speed, and use relevant captions where appropriate. Keep images close to matching text for better context, and use WebP or JPEG formats for the best balance of quality and size. Add structured data if applicable (like product or recipe markup), and include your images in an image sitemap to help Google index them. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly and displays images responsively. Lastly, always use original visuals—Google prefers unique content over generic stock photos.

By simply adding keywords in the description and using them as alt tags, you can easily rank your images. Also, make sure to use proper image size and good quality for better results.

Thanks for the detailed tips just starting out and didn’t realize image SEO had so many layers bookmarking this for my next site appreciate the clarity.

Add relevant captions, optimize image names, alt text and file size - these little steps will help images rank higher on Google.

To rank images, focus on a few key things: use descriptive filenames, write clear alt text, and include the image in contextually relevant content. Also, compress images for fast loading and consider adding structured data if relevant. These small steps make a big difference in Google Image rankings.
