I'm planning on running a WordPress blog, OK on the technical side of things, less so on content creation.... please could someone help?

I know the topic areas I plan to write about; either webhost reviews, or cars (the second topic I'm involved in through the blog linked to in my profile)

Read a lot of content from good writers, and reverse engineer what they do. And practice a lot. The more you write, the better writer you become. :)

You can follow brian dean content framework.

Use headlines and subheadings,
Readers want information, they want it fast. So keep your content short and simple, and read more good content from good writers.

I think a user Hasan has written some good threads about this.

Write as if you are speaking to readers. Use easy to understand language.

Read the engaging content on those topics and write a couple of articles and see how that works, sure you will get some spark from it.

If you are not good at writing, I won't suggest you find the technique. Because the content will come out good, only if you have natural writing skills. Don't push yourself which is not working.

better option find a good writer in the marketplace or hire a freelancer. You will get good content with a few $$

You can read more articles, research about the topic, write unique and informative content about it. Use interesting titles and keep content relevant.

Research is where I'm OK at; it's writing in a style that's interesting that's one problem.

What exactly do you want help with? You've mwntioned that you know what to write about. So what's missing? Creating the content itself? The content layout? Keywords?

Practice , practice and feedback in order to learn your weaknesses and improve.

Proper research and good English do lots of things.

Studying your audience is important. You have to connect to the emotions of your readers, to understand them so that you can give the spark that can light them up.

Find more articles about topics, get ideas from it, and then create your content depends on what the user wants, or otherwise, If you have the budget to hire a freelancer, then go for it.

Either of the two niches you mentioned could work.
As for the learning part, it’s not complicated, but it does take dedication. I would say that you should loosely follow about four steps:
1) Find and read quality content. Locate high-ranked blogs in your niche(s) and read as much as you can. Observe how the content is written, the formatting, pay attention to what the writers have focused on, etc. The more fine details you notice, the better you’ll be able to apply it.
2) Test yourself. Try and write similar articles, on similar (or same) topics. Don’t simply copy and replace words, but try to send a similar message in your own words. If you like what you see by the end, run it through Copyscape and (if it checks out) publish it.
3) Listen to feedback. Everyone’s a critic nowadays, but that doesn’t mean that there is no value in honest criticism. Learning that there’s something inadequate about your writing is never pleasant, but it is always a learning opportunity.
4) Experiment. Some may disagree with me on this, but there’s no real way to predict when and if something will blow up. Once you get good enough at reproducing existing content, you will want to create something you haven’t seen written up yet. Do it. The article may crash and burn, or it may become the most visited part of your website. Either way, you will come out of it a better writer.
