How to lower bounce rate?

I noticed that G uses "bounce rate" and "time on site" info to rank the sites. It tests new sites, letting them sit in top3 spots and then throws them far away, saying OK now I need to see your backlinking, if you want to come back to the SEPRs.

Is there any clean way to lower the bouce rates? A popup-popdown will probably be effective that way, but who doesn't hate these. May be a 1x1 iframe to an inner page? Some kind of tricky javascript?

it all really depends on your site and what the traffic is coming in for.

Do they see what they are looking for right off the bat.
Do they see ads as the first thing on the site.
Is the site full of text or is their images and other things to grab attention.
Also where is your customers coming from.
that the big one is where is your visitors coming from. If you did a bunch of profile links and forum posting and social bookmarketing most of that traffic is junk anyway. the bounce rate is always high for those.

So to off set that you need to have real customers that are looking for what your site talks about. If you dont have enough natural traffic then always do ads to help get real traffic of people looking for what you have to say and they will stay longer.

Create related and high quality content that people will like to read.

Guys, we're not talking here about white and good authority sites. I have a bunch of mfas. The whole idea of them is to get google traffic and convert it into adsense clicks. I don't want to invest money is people staying at my site and reading thoughtfully.
I have other sites for that.

i think there is no way to trick google with black hat for bounce rate.

I would say videos, images, but also headlines of posts can get a reader's attention. I recently added a new post onto one of my blogs that had a high bounce rate with the title, "Free *****". I think that it would grab the visitor's attention so they will want to read the entire post. Think about how magazines place the titles of the articles on the cover of their magazines, they are there to make a person curious and investigate.

write a script that stops the auto surfer. this will get you banned from the auto surfer but for the people running it in the background they will sit on your site fro 1-2 before they notice. How well this will work and for how long i have no idea but when i was trying to lower bounce rate i thought of it. The problem is i can't code to save my life so i never did it but it should work for a while though. And there are tons of auto surf networks out there.

if people want to bounce, they bounce, you cna't force them to stick to your site, one good way might be to put up a pic of a pretty or a sexy girl on your site which might glue men to the screens, but not for long. so technically it is hard. what i'd do is not put my sites at google analytics so that they won't know information that they forcefully take from your site and convince you to concent

I agree with this mostly. I have days when my bounce rate is 80% then I have days when it's around 3%-ish. Same site, same content.

That being said, in my experience, higher the SERP position, lower the bounce rate. People give more time to sites ranked highly then to those ranked on second/third page

- Fast loading page. No heavy graphics above the fold.
you may love your header image, but your visitors don't give a flying fuck about it

- Catchy headlines
grab their attention FAST

- Good, USEFUL content
it's not enough for your content to read/sound/look good, it needs to be captivating too

- Get TARGETED traffic
if the traffic comes looking for what you have to offer, the likelihood of them sticking around is much higher than if you get traffic for whatever crap term that's irrelevant to your content

1)Get targeted traffic. Make sure your visitor reached your site and find content that they search for.
2)Put Video on the front page. Most people will watch a video over reading text.
3)Make interesting content. Add interesting heading to your post to grab attention. Like "Top 10 things blah blah". People like to read lists and stats and numbers. Do not put a wall of text as they will deter people from actually reading.

If people want to bounce then your traffic isn't targeted.

If people don't want to spend time on your site it means 2 things -
1.) your site is shit
2.) your traffic is not targeted

Remember a bounce rate is based on someone leaving the page they entered from, so if you have good content and in say an article etc you have buttons that say "click here to read more" when they click it, it means 2 things... your content is worth continuing to read and when they click it it also removes your high bounce rate because they went through your site.

Forget ideas of pop ups etc, good content, spread over multiple pages with targeted traffic will lower this, my top site has a bounce rate 1.5-2% and an average time of +5mins.

I don't even agree with page load speed that much, again (I hate repeating myself too) if your content is worth viewing and your traffic is really interested they will wait.. My hosting is the biggest pile of crap going, but it still handles half a million page requests a month easily and the users never seem to mind. Google also ranks me pretty well on a 2 month old site (200 plus search queries now in my webmaster tools).
