how to learn wordpress?

Whats the best way to learn wordpress? I want to be really good at making my own sites..

I had to hire a guy to build me one because I wanted it quick and well he is being slow and is not that great at it so I just want him to complete and I will go back and fix how i want.

So where is some good information?

Can you read step by step directions?

Seriously a 6 year old could setup wordpress with how easy the directions are to follow.

SEO and settings are a different story. Search the forum for keywords like SEO wordpress settings
 
What do you mean by "learn wordpress"? If you can clarify that then someone might be able to help. Learn how to design? Learn to make themes? Learn to have better SEO? What do you need?

There are these new things called search engines. Very good for finding information.

Seriously though wordpress is a piece of piss. You can get by easily without any coding abilities.
 
I'd HIGHLY recommend you skip wordpress and join Ukescuba's site to learn Joomla. Sooo much better than WP.

But if you really want to learn wordpress then it is really easy and they have a codex that you can search for help. Until you try to SEO it, then it can be confusing (unless you actually want to leave it all up to plugins which I think is bad form but each to their own).

I found the hardest thing to do was getting it in my head that wordpress.com was entirely different to wordpress.org. Especially when I had to get an API key (for the Akismet plugin - antispam) from the .com version to put into the .org one.

For a list of plugins (you will have to keep updating which is really annoying and more so if you have more than one site b/c you need to go into admin for each site grrrr) search the forum for Jeff Johnson's wordpress plugin and go with that one (submits to a variety of sites automatically and suggests more plugins you should have)
 
I really hope you didn't pay some guy for the Famous 5-Minute Install. You should go here and read read read! The more you know! :thumb:

If you still can't configure/install wordpress after that, I hear that McDonald's has exciting career opportunities for energetic and hard-working individuals. jk, you'll get it. Wordpress is easy peasy.
 
i have learned wordpress through self tutorial and youtube is a lot of help for video tutorials if you encounter some little problems while learning along the way :) it is not that hard at all, actually it is quite the opposite - once you have the knowledge how to set it all up, you're good to go and you can set up your site however you want it and when you want it. ;)
 
Wordpress is so simple to use really, just dive in and have a go.
If you get stuck on anything just go to wordpress support, keep trying different layouts and plugins, most of the plugins come with comprehensive instructions anyway.

Most of the time you can use wusiwyg so it is very easy.

Even uploading to your host use fantastico.
 
i recently started using wordpress myself for my business blog. I installed it (easy) then I loaded a template(easy)...then I was trying to get thumbnails on the front page....i searched and searched for almost a day (looking through the actual coding for a solution)....then i found the solution...instead of the image being at http://mysite.com/wp/etc etc. you just upt /wp/etc etc into the value box.....

Im just not used to wordpress being soo easy i was looking for the hard solution.!

not sure joomla is better. depends what you're looking for. i find wp to be much quicker and simple to handle for microsites. joomla is great for larger sites (my opinion only...).but yes. joomla is great if you know how to tame that beast.

Yup I COMPLETELY agree. I use both regularly and find with imacros and some wp installers I can create nice complete autoblogs and microsites in under 15 min each. Wordpress can be real nice for quick micro sites however Joomla gives you much more extendability and power for larger applications.
 
You better watch Lynda's tutorial how to work with wordpress, it will be really informative.
There is a software called Artisteer with which you will be able to create Wordpress sites.
If you want to built it from scratch, you better study some php... :D

Lynda is great. You can also use expert village and youtube for some quick tutorials too.

Google is the best place to search this. You can also learn from Videos available at YOUTUBE.

Well it depends how much you need to know? Installing WordPress takes like five seconds with a web host, and isn't that hard... they have tutorials on the official WordPress site.

After that, installing themes and plugins can be done from inside the Dashboard.

That's pretty much all you need to know to get started blogging.
