How to learn Ubuntu, Debian and All linux distros?

Hi

Can you please guide me? I want to handle my VPS and dedicated servers myself, I mean from setup to running sites and fixing issues.

To get to that, what I need to learn first? How to start? I am clueless.

I am not in a hurry, I just want to add skill and save some money.

Best thing you can do is start using linux on your machine. This will help you with basic commands you need to learn.

Then watch some tutorials and that's it. It's not hard at all
 
You don't need to learn all linux distros, all linux distros run on the UNIX kernel meaning they are much more similar to each other than ubuntu to windows for example. Look up "basic linux commands", learn the important ones and start practicing.

Even macOS is fine to start out with. That's how I started out, I had my shittass 2013 MacBook air that my mom gave me because she spilled tea on it at least 3 separate times. Hell, I made my first machine learning project on that thing.
 
Ubuntu is the easiest to work with in my experience. You should rent a cheap VM with Ubuntu installed, then set something up - maybe a proxy server, a simple web server, email relay, a cloud storage server running own cloud, a backup server for your sites or a media server running Plex.

Pick something that would be useful to you, that’s the best way then you’ll be motivated to get it working.

During the process of setting that up you’ll be forced to learn some basic administration - that’s really the best way to learn in my experience.

Learn basic commands first. You will need them at every point. Then go through some LPIC-1 certification courses, I know some people will call it too much, but trust me it's not because you won't remember everything from there and that's fine. I don't remember a lot of things, but I know how to get by. Then go through DigitalOcean tutorials for setting up VPS. They cover everything in detail and trust me they're the best. I don't have to go through another tutorial if I am following their tutorials. This is enough.
I didn't know how to manage VPS, but two years ago I got a fucking dedicated server for creating a streaming site for $150-200 per month lol :D And then I downloaded all system administrator guides I could find. You'll learn it for sure and it will be the best feeling, but it takes some time. One week is more than enough to learn enough to manage your own servers. :)
 
Install a virtual machine like virtualbox and some light linux distro. Play around with it.

Then search for apache or nginx installation and follow through.

Do this for PHP and so on, eventually you'll be using linux regularly
 
You don't learn distros, you learn unix commands, from that you learn the programs you need. Also I would recommend you to "just do it" you will learn while doing and solving your own problems. It will be quite frustrating at the very beggining while you get used to stuff like navigating around the os, but it will pass fast.

Rather just install WSL if you are using windows, you won't be tempted to use any gui and you won't be force to completly change your os.
 
The way I taught myself is just download a nice flavour of linux check out this site for the most popular distro https://distrowatch.com/ and fire up virtux box and play around
 
You should install Ubuntu Desktop on your local machine. When you will face with problems, you will googling, and solve issues and learn Linux.
 
I'll send you some linux books. I already started reading one of them.
 
- Install linux as your desktop OS. You'll be forced to learn in order to get things done.

- DigitalOcean has amazing tutorials for countless server admin tasks. DigitalOcean has some of the best tutorials you will find.

- Spin up a server on DigitalOcean and follow some of their tutorials, and set up something that might be useful to you.
 
Install Linux, search for different things that you wanted to do before, example:
  • How to install a Linux software.
  • installing web server apache2, ngix.
  • Configure apache2 web hosts.
  • Install MySQL database.
  • Install multiple PHP versions.
And anything else you wanted to do, this will require some time and patience, but you can get used to it.
A lot of tutorials out there makes it even easier.
If you want some real time help, you can join Devcord Discord server, i usually get some help from there (google it)

start with ubuntu first in your local machine and than you can start with digital ocean tutorial of server setup.
 
Best way to do is get your main computer and put a linux distro on it like ubuntu. When you are forced to use it everyday it becomes second nature. The thought of using windows to this day makes me shudder and now I only use it to play games.
