How to know what is trending in a chosen topic

I run a busy entertainment website and I want to find a way to research what is trending in each art form. For instance, which bands/artists are trending in the music world at the moment. How is such thing possible?

I know that manually I could use Google keyword tool to see how many people search for a specific keyword, however that doesn't solve how I find out what is trending in a topic.

Do you guys have any input?

i'm using Google trends to pick up a topic for articles :)
 
Just like others I also check Google trends and also trending topic on twitter :)
