How To Know To Optimize For Uk or US?

I was wondering if you guys could help. How do you know to optimize for the US or another country?

For example I am in the UK and on one of my keyword searches I get 100,000 global and 74,000 local. Does this mean that the majority of searches are UK? Could some please help how I work this out.

If your using Goog Adwrds keyword tool the local is not included in the global monthly search volumes as if you look on some keywords the global # could be less than the local #...so they are seperate.

In your case then there are 74,000 in the UK PLUS the 100,000 global. Also are you using the broad or exact settings in match type, that'll change your number as well...

That was for the broad. So would I still be better to target the UK or not? How would I go about seeing global specifics? I still have a feeling that this particular keyword is a UK term but not sure if that makes sense. Maybe if the global shows it to be more european I might be better to target Uk than USA for instance.

Sounds like your in the UK so target the UK first and see how that goes, then you could go from there...

You have the global=100,000
try to see what the exact phrase match is, theoretically you should be shooting for 3k a month or 100/day searches for that phrase

Get your geo target in google webmaster tools it rocks and will push your listing higher in the country of your choice...

Use google webmaster and target UK... Get links from site which are ranking in uk... Get links from .uk tld.... It will help you to get better rank in your target country... Hosting in UK might also help... Also use .uk domain name for yourself...

Get .co.uk domain, google will target uk traffic there.

I have a plan to target the less crowded niche in UK market. Have gathered some info, but haven't started this yet. So this is not based on what really works, but from my hours and hours of research.

Here is it in summary:

1. Buy .co.uk domain
There's no need to geo target in Google Webmaster Tool if using this domain. But if you have bought a .com / .net / .org, you need to set it.

2. Create content with UK spelling etc

3. Get the majority of backlinks from UK sites.

4. Host your site with UK IP address.
I have not decided on this yet. Some sites hosted in US obviously rank very well in google.co.uk, but here's my thought.

As of now that site speed does matter in rankings, the closer you are to the geographic location of the market, the better your site performance is, so I think it's worth trying.

Again again again.. study your competition that is already ranking for your keyword in google.co.uk. Look at the top 10, top 100 sites whatever, see where their backlinks came from, try to get them too and so forth the chain. And yeh keep the links from uk based sites you don't need any spammy links from all around the world if you can get a few .edu or .gov links (uk based)... I guess that would make google feel you as a friend too.

1. Google your primary keyword
2. Note down the domain names for the top three results
3. Use SpyGlass or some other tool to check back links to those domains
4. Sort links by PR and note down the top PR domains
5. Start building back links from those high PR domains, when possible try putting your primary keyword as anchor text (not all the time though)
